I know that all the big name brands (Starboard, JP, Fanatic etc.) all have a matt finish on the bottom of their boards - but their rails usually have a gloss finish?, I have heard that a matt finish is better for water flow / less resistance but what about the rails? I recently bought a second hand Starboard Widepoint and the rails are a bit scratched & worn so I thought that a nice fix-up & sand would perhaps be a good idea. Can anyone please help & clarify - or does it really not matter that much - and should I just paint & patch-up and scratches / marks ?:-)
You can barely feel the difference when sanding a whole hull (the sanded board seem to accelerate - transition to planing, re-entries - more easily), so I dont know if only sanding the rails is worth the possible loss of resale value.
What is nice with a sanded finish is that it is easier to repair as new :-)
OK thanks - I would like to say that the bottom of the starboard is already a nice matt finish - it is just the rails that need attention, also there should be no loss of resale value - It would probably look better -
thanks regards John :-)
