Hi All. Opinions needed!!!!
Have been standing up now since Christmas on a 10'6" Laird. Great board for a mal style board and am going to keep it for all those magic long walled days.
But am looking to get a short board sup for the beach breaks around here and I am used to surfing, fish style short boards. So these two boards stand out.
The Laird is just under 30" wide, with really thin rails and tail area, with a volume around 150 litres. So the short sup I want needs to be wider and at my level about 120 - 130 litres volume. Both these boards seem to fit the bill.
I will try to demo both, but until that can happen open to your ideas and opinions.
Aloha

hi sandsy1
have the same laird, love it had it for 18 months now, its a keeper.
have been riding a starboard 8.10wide body for 6 months, great board for beach breaks and points as well, only tried the 8.2 wide body in flat water.
as im 6 foot and 87 kgs thought the 8.10 suited me better.
going to demo the 8.8 jp surf next week to see if its any better than the starby.
hope this helps
webbo. cheers.
Will be watching with interest Webbo, the 8'10 SB and the 8'8 JP Wide are both on my short list. D you mind posting an update after the demo?
thanks,
Scott.
Hi sandy have tried the 8'2 wide point carbon and the 8'2 WB. Now own the WB great board beach and point, surfs unreal and can handle the drop. You still need to get used to riding this kind of SUP but once you get that, great board. Stability won't be as good as the 10 footer as you would expect. Recommend you go for it I'm 6' 85 kg after a night out. Good luck
Hi Guys, I demo'd the 8 2 and loved it. Thought it went real well. Ended up at the 8 8 for one main reason. I just thought it would be a bit more all around. Love the board, rave about it. I am 5 10 and 85 kg. Easy to carry, great to surf, lively, responsive. Give it a try , you wont regret it.
Hi sandsy
I had the 8 10 wp, great easy board with short board feel. Changed to the 8.2 sb carbon wp no problem with stabiliy, whole lot better again. great board for the heavier rider, im 95kg,. Im sure the jp would be just as good, have not ridden it.

Thanks Webbo.
I will try the 8'10" Starby as well. I'm about 10kg lighter so I might be able to get away with the shorter board, only demo's will tell I suppose. The 8'8' jp does look really interesting as well.
Cheers
Thanks All
Really appreciate the input. Will hopefully get the chance to test some boards, when this storm clears.
Cheers

Sandsy1,
At your weight (77kg) you will easily be able to go to the SB 8'2 WP. The SB 8'10 is a super fun, easy and very stable board even in the really sloppy onshore surf and might be more board than you need to ride. The 8'2 WP might be the better choice...

I'm 96 to 98 kg - 6ft 4 tall and surfed the SB 8-2 wide point carbon for last 6 months and find it really stable and super fun in surf up to double over head - a great tip I found when surfing Rotto at double over head at Easter was the 4 quad fins can be slid back in boxes about 10mm and make the board really much more stable and super drivey in larger surf. It really is 2 boards in 1. Move the fins all the way forward - my standard set up and board is very fast on rail and super carvey in pocket up to 1 1/2 head high. With all shorter sups you have to expect to fall off more often and you gotta be more energized in take off area to keep balanced on board in onshore rough conditions. I'm a massive fan of this board. ![]()
Also on rocker I have ridden this board many times at Scabrough beach Perth & Rotto in head to head 1/2 in pitching close out waves and find the rocker perfect with no problems
Sandsy I would be trying the JP surf and whatever the equivalent is in the SB as well .
I have only been on the SUPs for about 4 months and am the same weight as you and have now one 10 ft 29 wide and one 9 ft 2 29 wide boards .my 9 ft 2 surfs like a short board . was looking at the wide body boards but was advised at my weight was no need to go that way .Good advice IMO .
Have tried the wide body's the extra few inches for me made a big difference both when paddling and surfing .the narrower boards are probably harder work to get used to but definitely worth it .
Reckon my next one will be a 9-9 6 long JP surf or Naish Hokua , unless I find something more fun in the meantime .
Cheers all. I appreciate the input.
Have organised a couple of trial boards for next week.
What's really interesting is that whenever I've bought a new surfboard, I've never been offered a demo board to try first.
Looking forward to going short!!!![]()
well what can I say had a demo of the 8.8 jp wide surf today in 3 foot fun waves, boy was I surprised. compared to my 8.10 starboard, this thing rocks, faster turns easier and sharper, just as stable as the starby, would love to try the 8.2 but none around, but that might be pushing thing??
much more refined rail design, tracks better and paddles easy going thru the waves. I rode both boards today as quads, but will be trading my starby
for the jp, as it is my opinion a better surfing sup'
hope this helps webbo.
cheers mate, that definitely helps thanks.
I am yet to hear a bad thing about the JP's, I think I am getting close to making a decision, it is coming down to 8'8 vs 8'2 I think.
Thanks,
Scott.
Hi Scott,
I have surfed both, and purchased the 8 8 only and only as it should be ( is I think) a little more all around. So far sadly I have not had a decent light off shore nice clean swell day to work with.
In the crap and cross chop of beach brakes with cross winds, it has performed beautifully.
The 82 performed really well too. As I was coming down from a 9 6 all wave and am learning I was also concerned about floating and "learning" from the board.
therefore went the 8 8 .
I may even eventually go smaller, but for now. Very happy with the board, go for it.

Sounds good. I will try to get a demo on a JP as well!!!
Have you had the chance to demo anything else Sandsy?
Cheers,
Scott.
Had a ride in choppy surf on a 8'10" wide point.
Way too big for me. Turns well and really stable, but for me too boaty.
The 8'2" wide point will be available next week.
Still trying to locate a JP for demo.
