Sorry guys I think you missed my point in the question I was asking is there a need for both the tracker and the watch
i know the tracker edits your gopro for you but also has all the readings that the watch does.

so would you use both items or just one over the other

what is the "tracker"? the key unique feature of the rip curl search gps watch (I work for them, so bias warning) is that it automatically identifies when you are surfing (via an algorithm based on acceleration, speed, direction and other factors) so that you have separate records of waves caught, speed on waves, etc, as well as total paddling for the session, and you can get a map of your session. you can use it to keep a log of all your surfs. it can be used to keep track of your downwinding or racing but on a pretty basic level and that is not what it is made for and there are probably much better options for that... I love mine except it can keep you in the water to ensure you get some acceptable stats from your surf before you come in! hope that helps, dools

Are you in the search GPS "department"? There are a couple of simple features I wish they would add/change.

I have always wished the search GPS would help me with my GoPro vids.

As an owner of the search GPS watch, and having just watched a couple of tracker movies - I do like the tracker if you want lots of details, and for the GoPro editing feature (big time saver - but Mac only...), and for the resolution (it appears to record GPS positions more frequently because the wave information is far more detailed than with the Rip Curl watch). The Trace has to be mounted on the board, so having a watch is far more convenient. And I have to confess to checking the watch after a good wave to see how fast I went (however it will only tell you if it was your fastest). And I like the wave count on the watch.

(How is your eye-sight? I find that some of the most useful information, like the current time and session length, are too small to read on the watch face.)

Depending on your application, you might like to throw the new Garmin camera into the mix. I don't think it counts waves, but it does record a lot of useful info and overlays it on the vid.

rip curl gps watch doesn't have an android app but is both mac and pc compatible, and has an apple app. it does not link with go pro (unlike surf trace) and does not have as much detail on the actual surfing (I have not tested the trace to see how accurate it is on that front, but have some doubts in that regard). for me as average punter the rip curl gps info is probably all I need, but if the trace was super accurate then its extra info would help with specific training for serious athletes. only value in using both would be having the current basic info on your rip curl watch while you surf, plus the more detailed stuff from the trace (and go pro link) after surf.... CSE i'll pm you a contact to pas on your questions - I don't work in this area, just a user!

I purchased a Ripcurl GPS watch in February with the understanding that Android software was being developed, however there is still no software for me to download my surfs via my Samsung phone. Any idea when the software will be available for Android users?

Thanks very much. We have swapped an e-mail - it is great being able to give your ideas directly to the person who can make it happen.

I for one can't choose one over the other but it does seem like the trace is more a editing tool

Quick update - I loved my SecureGPS watch until the clasp came undone while I was bodydragging back to my surfboard kiting the other day, and now it's at the bottom of the Atlantic.

The Trace looks pretty cool, especially for kiting (jump height/tack lengths, etc.) so from a tracking standpoint it looks to be better than the SecureGPS. I have a regular tide watch to use for an actual watch, so I may buy a Trace and try it out.

That and they have a 30% off promo code over here in the states, so it's $140 out the door compared to $400 for my watch sitting on the bottom of the Atlantic.

I have the ripcurl watch and noticed the other day after two years the keeper on the band is tearing. I rang Ripcurl directly and for $8 now have a new one in the post.. Very happy with mine and the service.

The band is super soft though so around any kind of work place they can be damaged easily.

I don't know about that, the watch has GPS, but I asked the guys at Trace and they said it wouldn't have full Trace functionality without having the Trace as well:

This is from a preview article on the Nixon watch:

Nixon is also bundling a couple of its own bespoke apps to take full advantage of the onboard sensors. The Nixon Mission app will deliver real time surf and snow conditions while the Trace app will let you attach a puck to surf or snowboard to track speed, distance and time spent.

Never really saw the appeal of the Nixon Mission as you need your phone connected to it to actually work. Sooooo why not just simply look at your phone ?

I am with Supmaori. I wish they would change just a few little things, but I always wear mine. 30 waves this morning, 23.2 km/hr fastest wave, over 12 km paddled, 200m longest wave, 2 1/2 hr session - small surf but fun! (But I am an engineer so I measure stuff )
