Well I recently purchased a 128 litre raptor ,great ,loose ,but does struggle on full days ,eg..high tide . Well I struggle .
I have my 9.6 x32 170 litre Hokua ,which feels huge now ..but will keep it .
so I need a in between board .
sensible thing would be to do is get the 9.1 x32 @150 litre giving me the 20 litre difference between them .
170,150,and 128 litre ,
but then I wonder why not go to the 8,8 x32 Hokua .@140 litres.
what would you do .?
Im 95 kgs .sometimes.
For full days, nothing beats a longboard. You can have a blast even on non-breaking waves.
Something long and narrow for paddling speed. I would keep volume at a minimum for nimbleness, unless you plan to use it only in very small waves. The stability of the longboard outline allows for using low volumes, and thin rails help a lot for noseriding.
Yesterday I had a blast, tide was too high in the morning so we were alone with a friend for 2 hours at one of the most famous beach break here, had insane fun on my 125l 9'2" performance (some rocker, modern rails, thrustser setup) LongSUP. Low volume (for my 95kg) means I was able to keep enjoying it when waves began to hollow out as the tide went out.
If you are a Naish addict, that would mean a Nalu I guess.

Hey .i have a Nalu .but I like short boards ...for rad moves ,I only use the Nalu if its 1 or 2 foot ,but then the raptor comes in a 3 foot .
yeah I like naish ...Im also considering the 8'10 mana
Have you considered trying something a bit narrower, to change things up a bit?
Hey wicksy .
yeah thought of that .
the 8'10 mana .is my other toss up .
even if I did demo all ....you would need a month .to decide .
i just pick one ,and ride it .never demo .
Have you tried the 8'10 .?
i believe ,it catches waves better than the 8.8 x32 .
thanks .
Hey .i have a Nalu .but I like short boards
Then, if you want to take off on fat small waves with a short board, the only option I know is to have the widest, thickest tail possible, such as a Simmons.
To turn it you will have to have your rear foot nearly on the leash plug, and so fins not too forward to cope with pushing so far back.
Yes ..that's why I like the x32 ,very wide ,and yes I ride on the tail .
its more catching the wave ,it is reef break where I surf 'and you have to catch early ,ready for the very steep face that appears .
i think the 9.1 is a safe bet,
i had the 9,6 out today ,I don't think I can ride this board much now ...it feels really big .
i guess I am advancing

CORRECTION ..
sorry missed the t in can and can't ,a bit under the weather last night ..hic.
Ah OK, I misundertood you. I tought you were speaking fat as the opposite of hollow.
For entering early a slab, yes, the Hokua-style outline is great, piercing through water for early entry. Simmons will be quite hairy there, to control when the wave hit the slab...
HI Tardy,
8'11x30" Jimmy Lewis Striker at 130L....See Previous posts....Perfect for filling that gap..

Hi Tardy
Sorry for the slow reply. Been on the water all weekend enjoying my new toy (Sunova Style 9'6
)
Have only briefly paddled an 8'5 Mana, so can't give an opinion on that board.
So from what I've read, you've got the short, wide Tomo style board (Raptor), youve got the huge potatoe chip X32 (Hokua), and you're not a big fan of longboards.
If I was you, I'd probably be looking for either a traditional shape board, but on the narrower/lower volume side of things, or something totally radical like a Sunova Speeed.
From my recent experiences I've come to the conclusion that going wider, or going higher volume doesn't make a board more stable in the ocean. In fact, the complete opposite seems to be true.
If you are a big Naish fan, maybe it's worth demoing an Hokua at the lower end of the volume range, or one of the Jimmy Lewis boards?
Anyway, enjoy the search!

Thanks for the reply .i don't mind the longboards in smaller surf ,still throw the 11 Nalu around ,when its small.,no choice realty ..beats sitting on the beach
yeah ...I admit it I'm a naish fan
sorry jimmy ..thanks for your help ,I've been thinking hard this last week about it .And I can ride 128 litre raptor no problem .
so that's the literage I will target .but longer and narrower .so i have the ying and yang ..maybe the 9.0 GTW OR 8.10 mana .
I
have you looked at the new MAD DOG in the Naish range.... Performance wise...it Sits between Hokua and X32. Reviews sound pretty good. Would perform way better than the Mana in reasonable surf I would think.
The GTW looks like a nice board. I've been tempted to try the 8'6.
I'm hovering around 78-80kg and am finding boards around the 110-115 litre range is my current sweet spot.
I reckon the 9'0 sounds like a good size for you. Hopefully you can snag a demo.
Let us know how you get on!
Tardy
I think you are trying to change it up by staying the same.
The 8'10 Mana might sound like a step up, but it's not going to leave your comfort zone....
My feeling is go with the 9'6 x 29 3/4" Hokua at 145 liters....
You are going to up your game by going narrow.... the performance of the 9'6 Hokua will handle some juice and be a better choice than the 8'10 Mana, IMO
You will find that the extra length will ease you into "narrower" and your "rail to rail" will improve dramatically.... on a good board, length is not a minus.
not to mention, your balance skills and confidence will greatly improve!
Thank s supthecreek.
the 8.10 mana is 30 and a bit ,wide ,so it is narrower than my x32 ,and 37 litres less .so a big step down .i thought.
a 30 wide board seem s narrower for me .
I use to have a 9.5 mana 2015 .and really enjoyed the shape ,as it rides up the tail very nice
without stalling ,like the high rocker x32 .
I did like the speed of the mana's.
but GTW 9,6 is worth a look .it might cover all bases.
