I've been riding my 8.10 133 litres mana for a while now ,,and did struggle on a lumpy on shore day ..but still had fun slashing around ,the next day similar conditions ..but a little bigger ,head high .I thought I'd get my 9,6
170 litre Hokua x32 ..dam near broke me ankles off .
.it took me two waves to relies ..it was a big board and walk back to turn it had to be done .got the hang of it ...but I didn't know how much more pressure is on you ,and your joints ,to turn a bigger board ,so going to a smaller board was one of the best things Ive done .I actually thought I could go back and use my older bigger boards ,but I don't even want to go back there ..
i still struggle a bit on my little board in chop ,but the benefits of small boards are sweet.
i have a couple of mates biting at the bit to get their hands on my 9,6 ,time for them to
cough up the bills![]()
i don't think I will ever go back up again .![]()
so if you think you can ride a smaller board go for it .but know you limits .
Well, I really enjoy surfing bigger boards. In fact I'll surf my 16ft 24.5" wide DW board in up to head high conditions just for the challenge. In small stuff it makes it more exciting. It's a skill all of its own to surf big boards. But you need the right conditions, and you have to be able to get your back foot over the fin. And obviously you wouldn't surf a 16ft board at a crowded break.
Each to their own, I guess.
Yes ,I'm talking a peeling point break though .
could you still surf your 16 on a point break ?
with a hairy lip .?
i to like a big down wind board for ocean .swell ,

Anymore.?
Im getting rid of my shorty and going to a 10fter exclusively. I had forgotten how much fun a longer board could be.
Ha indeed.
I have gone down, down and now sneaking back up to a happy medium.
I don't think I could ever settle for 1 board. The ocean is not a beast you can tame and tie to one plank, no matter how good you are.
I have narrowed it down to 4 after years of trial and error and fwcking around.
1 x 10 footer
1 x 9 foot plus gun
1 x 8 foot plus fun/semi serious
1 x sub 8 foot fwck around board
Currently in the process, and I thank all the SUP breezers for their invaluable knowledge and experience.
I love SUP and proud of it. ![]()

I really enjoy surfing a smaller board but also a bigger one too.
Selling my 9,5 Striker to get a 9,11 longboard with more rocker. I guess it will soon become my go to board for most things. Take the smaller one out on bigger days....or if I simply want to chuck about.
Back when I was just a regular surfer I hopped around my quiver from a 6-2 shortboard to a 10' log with stops in between depending on wave and mood.
Now it's still the same for me, from a 8-4 120l with steps up to a 11' 190l. I find the change up practical to match the wave setup and fun to match the mood.
The other thing, after the extra effort needed to turn the logs, the smaller boards feel effortless. Kind of like running with or without weights on your ankles.
As a proner short boards, fun boards, longboards. Similar now on sups, 8'4" to 9'4" different planshapes for different conditions. Still boogie board sometimes, a little body whompin, it's all good!

i should make it more clear ,i was only talking about performance surfing ..
a long board is a must in the quiver ,i think i need a 10,6 nalu .
I find if I just surf one size board, it gets redundant.
I always have long and short in the stable so I can change it up.

I've been from big to small, which seemed to be the natural and challenging way to go and then discovered the 10' noserider which became an addiction and I then hardly touched any of my other much shorter boards. But then......I purchased the Sunova Acid and...WOW. If I can master this little baby I want to go the next size down.
Whisky Tango Foxtrot
PS - I'm not sponsored or associated with Sunova (or Fanatic, or Atlantis, or Starboard or Naish).....but I'm open to significant offers that involve lots of money, international travel to exotic surfing locations and a garage full of fancy luxury cars in the new luxury water front house you will buy me. Be quick and get your offers in before I wake up to reality....
I'm too poor (financially and skilfully) to own more than one board - and probably would choose the wrong one if I had a few!
So I'll stick with my Flow 8'10 for a while.
Seems to handle just about anything.
But I do like trying different options.
Maybe I need a Caddy?
