Hi all first post here so please bear with me
I'm looking to buy my first board demo a couple on the weekend down the goldcoast Naish Nalu 10.6 GTW,Fantic fly 10.6,and JP fusion 10.2
I'm 85 kg 6ft looking for a board for flat water and then small waves get into catching some waves
Problem is there's too many choices I liked the Naish. Nalu 10.6 however 30inch and 160L seemed little tippy although I didn't fall off! First question is - is this normal for a newby or if I like the Nalu should I go up size to the 10.10 what would be pros and cons the 10.10 is 31 inch wide 210l if think ?

The other query is has anyone got feedback on JP fusion 10.2 seemed like a good board went straight & stable.

Lastly I like the Fanatic fly just wondering has anyone got a fanatic fly in HRS and what do you think of its performance the fly 10.6 seems more stable then Naish Nalu as it's slightly wider 31inch and 177L but the. Nalu cruises through the water easier it seems

Any feedback would be great appreciated as it's a bit confusing with all the choices I liked Naish Nalu but not sure if the slighter titty board would be an issue and the price is higher so just want to get it right
Thanks heaps

This is a family forum - you should not be commenting on titty boards

But I would just suggest that if you expect to get out reasonably frequently, then I think you should get a board that is a bit tippy now - it won't be for long (but don't get one that is so tippy it stops you from getting out).

I started on a 10' x 31" board and moved to a 9'5" pretty quickly and I was 10 kg heavier (and taller). (I don't have a Nalu though.)

I agree with CSU I bought a 11 ft 34 wide 205 ltrs Chinese knock off that is full of patches and I out surfed in 3 months , just jumped down to a 9'5 but it is 32 wide 170 ltrs and I am 6'3 110 kg I like the raised deck on the jp I demoed the 10'2 I ride a fanatic allwave hrs it's tough as nails and the next board I get will be the Nalu 10'6 for those long board style rides not sure if that helps I think I even confused myself a bit ? What I am saying is don't go to big i got frustrated with lack of surf options on the 11 ft'er think around the 170 is a great volume for your weight and height but that's just my limited opinion oh and don't buy cheap

I'm going to hazard a guess that DJ is going to say go the 10-10 if you are going to be doing nearly all flat water, and the 11ft Naish Nalu if wave riding might become a significant part of what you do.

The 10-6 Fanatic in HRS is a good board. I actually rather like the 11ft Fanatic too, and I'm quite a bit smaller than you. But I like challenge of surfing bigger boards, and you can't beat stability for giving you the fun factor.

The Nalu 10-6 might be a teensy bit small for you if you are mainly doing flatwater, but it's perfectly do-able at your weight and height. I don't think any of the boards you mention would be a bad choice. Just pick the one that seems the most fun to you. Whatever you get, in a year (or less) you'll want something else, and all of them will be easy to sell if you want to (the Nalu 10-6 would probably hold it's value best).

Good advice already
You wont have a problem with any of the boards you mentioned.
Everyone new to SUPing experiences the balance issues initially especially in chop or surf. The learning curve is fast if you sup all the time and you will improve quickly.
If you think you will use it in the surf equally to the flat water use, go the Nalu 10'6" the lower volume will give you more manoeuvrability which you will want in the surf. After a short time it wont be as tippy.
If you will only use it occasionally and/or for other family members go the larger sizes.
Another option to consider is the JP Allround, it comes in 4 sizes, I would recommend the 10'6" x 30" or the 11'2" x 30" (base the size on your expected use.)
If you become like most of us on this forum you will possibly end up with another board within the year.
Have fun

Hi krist thanks mate for the info makes great sense to me and agree the JP raised deck is great.ive been thinking about the fanatic fly 10.6 HRS as an option to the Naish Nalu but it did seem slower through the water although we were against wind and changing tide so very hard to compare do you have any options on the fanatic fly hrs ?

Hi mate. My wife has the Fanatic Fly HRS in the girls colour in a 9'6. I have used it a bit, I am 5'8. 71kg. I have been surprised how well it paddles actually. Haven't had it in the surf yet so can't comment on that. I use her board to paddle around with my daughter sitting on the front of it.

Hi scotchman
the nalu's are great boards .its a do it all ..they paddle nice on flat water ..
im 97 kg and have the 11' it's my small wave board ..they catch waves real easy .
and I think at your weight the 10.6 should be fine ..you didn't fall off first go so thats a bonus .
10.6 @160 litres 11' @175 11.4 @180 ..I think the 10'10 you will find it doesn't turn that well due to the channels .201 litre it's big .
I also like the fanatic ..fly ..also good quality and nice shape.and nice literage @177 .

good you demo ed .go with what felt best .

Nalu

I would highly recommend you talk to a good board shop (underline good), internet advice is only worth so much (and yes I do appreciate the irony...). If you demo'd those boards on the GC chances are you already have.

Plenty of big talkers on forums but unless you know who is behind the keyboard any advice is only worth so much.

If it's mostly for flat water paddling I would recommend the 10'10'' Nalu.. or the Fanatic Fly because of the slightly added stability over the 10'6'' Nalu.

11' Nalu? I paddled one recently, was pleasantly surprised at a) stability and b) glide.

We had 14 of the 10'6 Fanatic Fly's in our hire fleet and I have spent quite a bit of time on it (good board). For your weight and height it would be the perfect first board and they are surprisingly fun in the waves. The HRS construction is pretty bullet proof as well and the only time we had any real issues was when customers abused the equipment.

As an alternative also have a look at the Blue Planet Paradise 10'0 x 31 x 175L or the 10'2 x 32 x 179L Blue Planet Easy. I've got three of their boards now and have been very happy with performance, construction.

I've got a 10'6" Fanatic Fly and an 11'6" Naish Nalu and I'm 10kg heavier than you. The big Nalu is my go to board for anything, it loves the rough and will catch any (small) wave. Probably catch big ones too but I'm not that keen... IMO a big fat board is easier to learn on, spend more time above water. It took me probably a year between having my feet rusted to the board to now being able to bounce around the mid-line like Fred Astaire. I need to move up to a 14' downwinder but I'm just too comfy on the Nalu
