How long should your leg rope be for a, eg 9ft surf sup, same length as the board, shorter or longer?

Usually it's about the same length as the board especially if you nose ride..
I use a 10' leash on everything.. even though I can't nose ride.. ![]()
As the railsaver, plug positioning, and cords add at least 1' to the length, you should use 1' less than the board length.
here is a 6' leash on my 6'9"
And a 8' on my 8'9"
I use a 7' on my 8'4" for instance, and 6' leashes up to 7'6" boards. A shorter leash means less danger for surfers around you, a quicker recovery ( board back to you with a leg kick) and less tangles. A longer leash is better in bigger waves to keep the board away from you in wipeouts and dampen more the wave pull.
The difficulty is finding thick enough short leashes for powerful head-high waves. I think only DaKine makes a 8mm 7' leash for instance.
About a foot longer than your board unless you want to get clobbered.6ft leashes are for 5'3" short boards.
it also depends what sort of surfing you do,
ie if you are riding a longboard sup and might noseride or move around a bit you will need something as long as the board, where as if you are riding a shortboard style sup and surf from the tail you can use a shorter legrope,
i mostly surf a 9 foot performance style board so as i surf it from the tail and dont tent to move around so i tend to use a shortboard legrope
6ftX7mm in normal conditions and something a bit bigger if the surf is bigger
7X8mm
i used to use a longer style longboard legrope 10foot in bigger surf but i found that it would just stretch and drag me where as a shorter thicker legrope wouldnt,
but it's really just personal preference

preferably a 12 foot Outer Reef Creatures of Leisure........often you can only get the 10 foot these days though.
Have two leashes on the go.......almost new one I only use in big surf.......the older one i use the rest of the time.
Have got this concept that the longer the leash......the more stretch.....the less likely the leggie will suffer major trauma from the fins.
And the mavericks guys have the super long leashes with waist belts.
You got to man up and make your own decisions.......depending on what size waves you surf
