I came across a good deal on a clean used Jimmy Lewis Stun Gun 9’7″ x 31″ x 4″ x136L.
I weigh 195 pounds (97.5 kg) so the 9’2″ x 30.25″ x 3.8″ x 124L Stun Gun would probably be a better board for me, but it's the 9'-7" that's available - so I'm tempted (although I wish it was only 29" wide).
I won't be able to try it before I buy it (IF I buy it) so I was wondering what can I expect a 9'-7" Jimmy Lewis Stun Gun to ride like in "normal" stuff like sloppy to clean beach and reef breaks in the knee to head-high range?
Thanks
Yes I agree with Hilly...The 9'2 would be better...I'm 80+kg and ride the 8'7 as my Step-up board & it's super stable....Great board though even in smaller surf

Just curious about something... Do you know why Jimmy is making his Stun Guns so wide? (9-7 is 31" wide) I get it that width increases volume and stability when paddling but all that width on a "gun" style board designed for big powerful waves would be a serious hindrance. I guess that's why there will always be custom boards but do you know why he did that? I'm asking because it doesn't seem that a board like that should be more than 29" tops.
Hi Magentawave,
The Stun Gun isn't necessarily a "Gun" as such, it's just a more refined sup with thinner rails for more aggressive turns...I use the 8'7 as my Step-Up board because I normally ride the 7'10 Super Tech & I'm a shortboard surfer of 35 years so for me it works as a Gun & still gives me the stability when it's rough with plenty of movement in the ocean...If you want a narrower "gun" for bigger waves the Bombora Series is designed for that....IE 10'x 28" (125L) (See Kealii Mamala surfing Jaws & Maverick's on a stock JL Bombora or Teahupoo on his Stun Gun)
My 8'7" Stun Gun still surfs & turns easily in 2-4" surf too....Hope this helps
I actually don't want a gun but was mostly wondering why Jimmy made a pointy sup (compared to most) 9-7 so darn wide?

So did I, as I bought one and hated it. JL did not want to discuss it when I emailed him. I think it is designed for big Hawaiian dudes who can bury a rail. 120kg + at a guess.
Hi Hilly,
Not sure what size you had & why you hated it.... i love the 8'7 Stun Gun because it surfs like a "real" surfboard but that's the beauty of surfing & sup'ing in that there's plenty of choice & it's "horses for courses" :)

Yeah, the 8-7 looks cool but the 8-7 at 29 1/2" wide isn't overly wide, whereas the 9-7 at 31" wide seems extreme for the type of sup that it is.
