I'm looking for SUP 8'10" - 9'6" coming down from a 10'x30'.
Suitable for choppy waves shoulder to overhead+ height, with good glide for quickly getting out, and to get on waves early away from surf line up. I would sacrifice a little performance to get more waves than not.
But.. still aiming for light, fast feel, thin rails, perhaps not too much rocker through middle- would consider spending to get carbon version etc.

I am 80kgs and feel 30' is good width and thinking around 9'2?
Fanatic 8'10" allwave was fun but too corky for me. Felt a bit wide and too much volume. Then also looking for slightly more than glide Nash Mana 8'10" x 30.5 133L which was alright. (the 10' mana I tried was awful for me and different shape) I don't want to get stuck with anything too small I cant paddle out but dont want to again out grow my board.

Interested in hearing recommendations/comparisons for these listed.

Starboard
9" x 30" converse 137L 8kg
9'1"x 29" 2012 135L 7.6kg
9' x 29" pro 2013 118L great reviews but perhaps ill struggle with low volume and width?
9'5"x 30 140L

Fanatic prowave
8'10 119L 29.25
9'2" x 30" 135L 2012
9'3" x 30.5 134L 2013

JP
9'2 " x30' 136L 8+9.5 kgs

Nash Hokua
9'0" x 28 3/4' 125L
9'5" x 29.5 140L
9'6"

hawaiian pro design Hull Ripper
9'2 x 30 3/4 126L
9'6” x 30 1/2” 139L

Nash Mana
8'10" x 30.5 133L

thanks!!

Hi,

I have a converse silver ast and want to go to a smaller board.
(75kg)
first had the SB drive 10.5 x 30 as my 1st board.

i have been surfing for 15years so I'm used to faster response and shorter turns.
The converse was a perfect board to take a step towards this.
the stabilty is great and it takes up waves very good.
For me it gives a nice longboard surf feeling but as I said I would like a board that is a bit more challenging.

cheers

I'm 85 kilos and have been riding the PSH 8'9 hull ripper for about 10 months and have ridden it in everything kind of condition. My finances only allow me a one board quiver and so far Its keeping me very satisfied!
recently took it to Bali and did some very long paddles on it and had no problems,
it glides amazingly well for a sub 9 foot board....definitely worth a test run and make sure you try it as a quad that is all I run in it now PSH fins or SA4's.
Happy hunting!

I just bought the 2013 starboard 9x29
It actually feels more stable then the 2012 9'1x 29
Even though its less volume I got to try them back to back.
I'm 70kg and its my first board I've had afew goes on hire and demo boards and this felt fine more me

I reckon that the wide points might be an ok option for you. At 80kg even 118 litres should float you pretty well.

The starboard 8-10 wp is not as corky as the all wave.

Suppose,

Go with the JP you will not be disappointed. Both constructions are great and in fact if you are going to go the carbon at your weight you could go down to the 8'10" easy as the carbon models seem to have that little bit extra float (not sure why but they just do). They both surf very much like normal short boards and have a lot of glide. The thing I like most is the thickness of the boards they are just a scaled up version of a surfboard some of the other SUPs I have seen seem to have very chunky section where you stand which give the extra volumne but think this in turns makes the rails at this section to boxy.

I highly recommend you demo a JP before you llok at buying any other board.

Thank you all for the feedback. I'm more confused than ever. I agree with each of you and the problem is I want them all. Seems to be a common question for people transitioning to shorter boards. 1st world problems hey..

@SupCharlie did you try SB 9x29 pro? Would that be a better choice than converse? I think its between SB 2013 if I can handle 118ltrs and perhaps JP for me.
@Zeusman - looks like you have had a few boards, that C4 MR Pro. 9'2" x 29.5 looks sweet shape might be too hard for me buy in Melbourne, let alone demo. What do you like in the boards you've ridden.

Mate I faced the same problem a few months back, I wanted to down size and in particular down weight. I had a 9'3" psh ripper weighed in at 10.4kg just couldn't do the surf manouvers I wanted to. checked out a few boards and opted for a laguna bay custom, 8'8"x29.5"x4.25", 7.2kg fully decked out (dry)
Its the best decision I made. I weigh 82kg, 177cm.
Just something to consider.
I believe SHQ have JP in Melbourne, I reckon the 8'10" would be fine for you

Hi Suppose,

no I haven't tried any of the pro boards.
we don't get to test these pro boards over here because the SUP is not very popular over here (Belgium) but it's growing.

I did try the 8'2" x 32 JP 2013 124L widebody with quad fin. Its very stable behind the waves and good in the waves. Coming from a converse silver ast that really felt like a faster board and it turned very well. I'm not an expert but I think that if you go for a board with less volume like the SB pro 118L you will have to keep the board moving more to get more stability but once your on a wave...

I've owned & ridden quite a few boards now & my preference is for boards that are thinner & concaved through the deck, with refined/harder rails.

I had a 9'6 Hull Ripper & enjoyed it for a while. It is a very specific style of board though. It has to be ridden from right back on the tail or it just doesn't work.
As I tested other boards I began steering away from boards that are 4+inches in thickness. I find them too corky which raises center of gravity & thus, makes them less stable & less sensitive.

I now ride both the 9'10 & 9'0 Hokuas. Both are awesome IMO. The 9'10 is super stable & still rips. I feel it is the board that has helped improve my surfing the most.
The 9'0 I bought as a step down & challenge. I am struggling at the moment with its stability but on a wave it is better than anything else I've ridden so far. It feels incredibly light under foot & goes exatly where you want, when you want.

I like SB carbon pro boards too but I find it hard to justify the price.

The C4 MR looks like a fantastic shape to me. Similar in outline to a hokua but with more volume. I have paddled one in flat water & it felt nice. Stability wise it sits between the 2 Hokuas. If I had the cash i'd definitely be adding one the my quiver.

Keep in mind that I weigh 100kg & weight affects how a board behaves dramatically.

G'day Mate,

Even though it's not on your list, I'm going to recommend the Jimmy Lewis 9'2"x30&1/4" Stun Gun. I progressed from a SB 8'10" WP to the "Stunner" and could not be more happy. It has nice thin rails and a lowish volume of 123 ltrs. The board is much quicker down the line than the WP, but in Quad setup, is also more manouverable and with the up-turned nose, late take-offs and re-entries off the lip give far more consistent results. Sure it's not as stable in the slop, but a small price to pay for a **** load of extra performance. Glide is also better than the WP. These boards are also tough. I had a heavy collision with a surfboard rider the other day (his fault not mine) and his board was opened up like a sardine can, whereas the "Stunner" only recieved superfitial damage to the gel coat on the nose.
The SB WP is a great board, the Stun Gun in Quad setup is far better IMHO.

Good comments zman I have the 9'5 but at 105kg i struggle too much on the messier days love the Hokuas so I bought the 9'10 think it will be that great board for me to progress further as well too. Think I saw u out the bay on it the other week u were ripping pretty well in small stuff. How do you find it in bigger better surf? Hope to find out on the weekend will have it at Crescent Head for 4 days YEEWW!!!

Yeah I was out there 2 weeks ago demoing some Starby boards. 8'5 Pocket Rocket & 8'2 Widepoint. They were fun but not really my cup of tea.

I've had the 9'10 in over head high & its awesome!! Really good on a nice open faced wave with room to move.

Anyone bought a 8'10 and wished it was slightly longer? What are pros of cons from experience. Advantages of the 9'2"?

Is stability, glide much of muchness based on my weight? I don't want to be a complete gumpy, but maybe too late with a question like this

Suppose,

I have used both and yes the 9'2" is more stable at about 10L more volume but when you compare the length of the two when next to each other there is very little in it. I love the 8'10" but found that when it was windy it was hard to keep it moving when paddling back out to the take off zone espically if it was somewhere like Yallingup which has long rides. The 9'2" has with the 10L more volume has made this a breeze. As for how they compare on the wave there is not much in it in fact and the 9'2" has a lot of tail rocker. As mentioned before or on other threads the biggest thing to improve the boards performace is to set it up as a thruster, see Piors thread on JP fins. One thing I have also notice is due to the higher tail rocker that which go'es againstthe norm is that the further back the centre fin is set the losser the board feels.

I have never wished for my 8'10 to be any longer but when the surf is fast i wish i had a Prowave as the Allwaves have a lot of tail rocker and are slower. But the all waves are outstanding in sloppy or choppy conditions they are just so stable.

I'm 85kgs and i'm glad i went for the 8'10 over the 9'2 I found the 8'10 to be a lot more manoverable but i guess it comes down to individual preference.

Sorry mate no idea!! I try not to get to involved in other people's deals. I doubt Luke would pay full price for any surfing products, remember he did have his own line of sup boards with magic carpet at one stage and I'm sure he could choose to ride anyone's boards and they would look after him if they could.
