Hi guys...i have the first Methane Limited Edition Hinano kialoa paddle and im looking at getting the new 2015 Methane 2...purely for surf. 2 questions...1)Has anyone tried these and can comment on performance and how they differ from the first methane paddles and their suitability for surf.
2)While at a recent SUP contest I noticed that my paddle with alot longer than other competitors of the same or similar height. Im 5ft 11/ 87Kgs..and my current methane is 1.96m from tip of blade to top of handle...love it and it works in surf and flat water...but Id like to make my second methane just for surf. What length should i have this surf paddle. Im advanced level in skill . Any help appreciated.

I had the old methane still have it, I went with the gl2 for surf now just stronger
I think you might find that a few of us that looked at the new methane went for the gl2

I surfed with Kai Bates at a surf camp a little while back and asked his advise on paddle length. He has his very short a bit above nose height. I cut mine to just above eyebrow height. Took a while to get used to it, but has allowed me to move to a much smaller board. It forces you to bend at the knees and lower your centre of gravity. My 2 cents worth...
The Methane 2 is a very nice paddle. But I think that it only comes with a round shaft?? I went to buy a GL2 paddle but that only had a round shaft too (I have the original Methane and GL Surf and they both have oval shafts). This was a deal-breaker for me, but if you don't mind a round shaft as much as I do then the new ones are otherwise quite a big improvement I think.

I know both these paddes well and also still have a Hinano Methane..
Although the new Methane 2 looks very similar they are noticeably different..
The first thing you will notice is the blade has slightly more angle on it..
The next thing is the shaft and handle feel very different and there is noticeably more flex in the shaft..
I'm currently using the new Pipes 2.. I first thought the new shaft was a bit soft but I'm now liking it..
The problem with the original Merhane/Pipes shaft was that if you cut it down to current surf lengths you had two problems.. The handle didn't fit and the shaft became too stiff..
The new KIALOA designs addresses these problems.. Great paddles.. 
I'm currently at about 4" overhead for my surfing paddle..
The first paddle that I put RSPro on in this vid is my new Pipes 2.. and the second is the new Gerry Lopez paddle..

DJ what does the change in angle do when paddling? I'm still keep my methane hinano so this new one will b cut slightly shorter..dies the methane 2 have oval or tapered shaft I think you can get an adjustable carbon pro T6 insert out in them..but never have favoured adjustable paddles..have you had any experience with these DJ or Chris. Great video..paddle saver tape looks good .. unfortunately not available in NZ..I usually use electrical tape on my methane

The new Methane 2 has a round shaft (with no taper) that has been made slightly oval in the mid part of the shaft (where your lower hand is) and I think the main reason for the slight increase in blade angle is to position the blade more vertical at the max power part of the stroke (it's noticeably more powerful) and reach and exit from the water is slightly improved but IMO skimming the blade across the water during turns is slightly more catchy.. The Gerry Lopez paddle has even less angle on the blade than the original Methane and feels great when swapping quickly from side to side and skimming the paddle when turning left and right on a wave but doesn't feel as powerful as the Methane 2.. It's also noticeably stuffer in the shaft..
I agree Dj regarding the gl2 is is not as powerfully as the methane but it is better as a surf paddle easy to chuck about
For me it works as my take offs are late anyway so not reAly paddling for a wave as such.
But in saying that I would like to own the methane 2 as a second surf paddle
I also miss the oval shaft the round shaft is hard to get use to and almost feels cumbersome
