Now I can see how the foil is behaving...

They were pretty nice waves - did it feel better on the foil compared to normal surfing?

It was interesting to see when the foil kicked it. It seemed like you were going pretty fast sometimes before the foil engaged, or did it depend on your fore-aft weight distribution?

So how did the other surfers feel about you learning on the sup foil? Get any agro? Any near misses?

Did you slice and dice any dolphins? There is a place near where I live where I could possibly learn to foil, but you often see dolphins there. Hate to hit one...

Well done ,
for me I enjoyed watching it ,but I can't see the advantages for me personally in using a foil in
such a nice wave .
i like bottom hand turning and coming off the lip .using the rail.
It looks hard to do ,and can see it being good for smaller waves .

i think the buzz is being high out of the water .
Im scared of heights

if you were at my local spot wasting waves like that ,dont think you would make it back to the car park in one piece .

I think you should try to find a better wave for foiling. This one is slowing your progression:
- it is surfable, breaking wave, with no much room for the foil to fly in.
- it changes shape quite rapidly
- you are too close to surfers, and especially without straps falls can happen quickly and unexpectedly. The chap at 0:35 was lucky. You should never have surfers closer than the extended leash + board distance from you.

Try to find a wave that just feathers, and then keep on rolling without breaking. On a beach break, typically some outside bank, or a slight onshore days that remove the "bite" from the waves. Or start at the peak, and fly away far on the shoulder, you should avoid waves that break also in front of you.

It is nice to see you were able to progress in these adverse conditions, however. You seem to find nearly always the proper position for the front foot, which is key. And was lucky to not hit anybody :-)

As an advice, try to bend more the knees, aka a "stink bug" position. This will give you more room for your body to move, you often have the legs nearly extended, and thus are somewhat locked into position and are just following where the foil is going, as you have no moving room for your upper body to change position to steer it.

honestly mate, good on you for foiling as it will be a great progression to the sport and something i would be super keen to do, but if someone was to show me this video as foiling, i wouldn't bother at all, probably not the best set up or wave to foil at especially with the people (and to think they already hate sups) and the fact the waves look pretty good to surf, what a few guys have already mentioned the foil takes a really long time to engage most of the time it never really does, probably only really got on the foil once or twice if that, but really i have seen guys doing this at one of my local breaks where they sit on the inside of the take off and there is a bit of a reform/hole set up and it actually looks really fun

Have you considered using a foot strap?
Maybe a better wave, possibly less steep takeoff/more of a fatter rolling wave,

The best anti foil video ever. Were any proners sliced and diced??

That's way too close to other surfers.

I am a Paddle Board Dealer so I need to try the latest things.

As far as preference, I normally ride very short surf sups in the 6-6'6" Range for waves like the ones in the video.
I step up to 9'9"-9'10" for heavy waves with strong currents..

The foil is a very interesting sensation.
Muscle memory is something you will have to fight initially.
You have got to keep the back foot centered.
Front foot pressure keeps the nose down..
Keep it down for the steep take offs and then transition to back foot to turn and lift..
Too much lift = stall/over the handle bars..

As far as crowds and learning..
I needed to be more selective.
With people around don't take unnecessary risks with super late take offs and people below you...

People are initially awed when they realize it is a foil..
Since they can't see the foil when you are standing on the board, I let people know I am on a foil..beware and aware

I am a dawn patrol guy so usually just the crew..
We all know each other and are used to each other..

I wear a very short leash and on foil I am using a coil

The intent of this video was to show how the foil is behaving.
If the board is out of the water then you are foiling, not necessary to go full mast.

As far as straps, I move my feet around too much. Additionally I could see it would be easy to twist or sprain an ankle or knee if strapped..

We don't have any local waves that roll on and on...so we do the best we can with what we have..

As far as wasting waves, these are pretty normal conditions for around here, gotta try stuff..
Been supping here since 2008 so it is pretty accepted if you are competent..

Yep. If SUP's aren't popular at your break now this will make it worse. There has to be a safer easier wave to learn on.

If you wouldn't do that around your kids, it's not safe in the line up.

It's actually a very good video of what wave NOT TO RIDE when learning. The face was just too steep. Ralf actually did really well to make those take off's (that's hard). I still cringe watching as he goes between surfers. You need a softer wave and rule number one on the foil no late take off's , get out wider and paddle in early . Don't square stance paddling for a wave get in surfer stance , if you are scratching to get on don't take it. Go out wide set yourself up and fly down the fall line and stay away from the pocket. Again the best foil waves are away from where anyone else can take off from

The slow-mo's are pretty nice, but you need more star wipes

So, because you are a dealer it's ok?

I've had 9 years experience so I'm good enough

One paddle up the river with mac62 isn't 9 years experience . Maybe your referring to splashing around on a short board
