A lot of hype around about high aspect wings these days. Signature have been doing them for a while. I am not into pumping it looks ugly, and I am **** at it
Really like the way Jake jacko surfs on his old GoFoil gear and this new clip of the 1.5 gen wings is good. Pinched from the zone.

I agree with you hilly. I like to know how well a board or foil performs on its own with very little input from the rider before I make a purchase.
That way I know that my inputs like using a paddle for SUPing & pumping for foiling will be a bonus.
I can see that foils are going to go the same way as the shortboard revolution. That is, a high performance shortboard won't work well unless pumped to go the distance and a single fin or mal doesn't really need pumping to go the distance.
So it will be up to the buyer to know what they want for their purpose.
Nice video.

great skills Kalama Jr and I dont know how he pumps that IWA?
My IWA foil skills sux compare to that and I'll let you know soon about the HA GL comparison to LA wings.

Talking to good guys on Axis 900 wings indicate they have to be careful turning else they pop a wing. They are prone guys who just love blasting around from wave to wave. Way too youthful and enthusiastic for me, they do wave as they blast past me as I paddle back out

I'm finding that my GL has kicked the Iwa out of bed completely. My M200 wing went on gumtree the second day I had the GL too.

Id say it probably didn't turn as well but then I tinkered with the geometry of the setup and now it's red hot. So far I've gotten the tip out a few times...on the Iwa that would be the end of it but the Gl doesn't really care.

The thing I love the most about the HA wing is that it has shrank the lineup for me. I can run down refracted bits of swell and "get ahead " of the wave I took off on, cover more distance on weak waves and pump way further faster than I could on the Iwa. It's very easy to turn downwind and coast along on weak little windlumps too. I'm frothing on the possibilities for summer.

I think you need to try one first Hilly , I don't think anyone in the history of surfing said " I want my board to go slower" From the initial take off on the new higher aspect designed wings , it really is a holy sh!t moment , it's just so fast. Yes they have a smaller sweet spot and can skecth out pretty easy but that's generally due to all the extra speed , you soon adjust to it. Agree there will always be a place for the std design lower aspect wings but it's just human nature to always want to improve.

Re the video yes he's ripping in straps

That was my point.
Tried the 900 think it was too small on the day.

I agree Hilly for surfing the old wings are still good and also I would recommend anyone learning to foil the lower aspect is a better choice.
I used the new GL180 surfing for the first time a weekend ago on both sat and sunday. Got used to them quite quickly but i have been using the GL240 downwinding atlest 3 times before that so i had a bit of an idea how it would feel. I actually found the HA wing turned very similar to the old wing, maybe a bit looser, a lot faster and more reponsive but nothing i could describe negative in anyway. Best part is that i managed to turn off a couple of waves and pump back on to another one. I was on a sup and I weigh about 88kg. So I am happy i made the switch as I could never quite make it back out far enough on the old IWA.

The Signature one was impressive. Derek is a freak and did that on the old wings.
Thanks good vids.

Kane was riding a Signature Stealth in that video , very different to the long skinny wings , more like the MFC 1075 cm2

Finally got some GoFoil GL measurements to make some comparisons.

GL 180 :- 960mm wide x 163mm cord ( seems to just as good as 210 & faster)
GL 210 :- 960mm wide x 190mm cord
GL 240 :- 1066mm wide x 215mm cord

Axis 900:- 900mm wide x 175 cord 1277 cm2 ( Kai is apx 1200 cm2 ) ( Naish Large 1236 cm2 )
Axis 1000:- 1000mm wide x 175 cord 1388 cm2 (Iwa is apx 1600 cm2) (Naish XL 1572 cm2 )

The Signature 210 Albatross 1355cm2 is very close to the GL180/210 & Axis 1000 . Out of the 3 , Signature & GF are flatter and faster but the Axis is not far behind with more wing curve giving it slightly better turning ability. These were never designed as surf wings but for DW but they have made their way into the line up. The Signature 210 is nothing new it's actually a re badged Uni Foil so the design is close to 2 years old , it's just now riders ability have caught up to this great foil.

You can see by the above comparing the Axis 1000 to a Iwa . The advantages of high aspect it simply gives heaps more speed for way less surface area. Simple Physics you want a boat to got faster simply reduce the wetted area , same goes for a foil.

Haha yeah that's it but that's whats coming next higher aspect surfing wings with a deeper cord like the MFC & Lift . Kane was on a 175 Stealth which is pretty small they are bringing out a 200 Stealth , early word from the proto testers is really good . Axis is working on something similar as well . Exciting times .

Thanks for this Piros. Informative as always. Just to add... I've just measured my Unifoil 210 (signature 210) and its 950mm wide x 168mm cord. That puts it far nearer the gofoil GL 180 than the 210 and would make sense based on pics Ive seen (GL 210 looks a lot less high aspect than unifoil/signature).

There's a unifoil 190 on the way apparently. It will be interesting whether they reduce width or chord to achieve that reduction in surface area. At 68kg I cant say Ive ever felt too much lift with the 210 (at least on a SUP... on a prone I use 175) and that now makes sense now I know it's very close to the GL180 in size.

Thanks for that Matt just shows how close the GL 180 & Sig/Uni 210 are even the flat rear wings are the same but GF now have one with a wider cord. All Signature & Uni wings are interchangeable and have a good variety of rears to suits , they are worth playing around with. I have spoken to Cliff at Uni Foil and yes the 190 is already being made , he is about to ramp his own production so expect to see a lot more Uni foils & Signature are doing their own new designs as well. So we have barely scratched the surface on these new high aspect wings .

Amazing Stuff everyone so good to know whats coming out and in the works... I suppose you can't go wrong with either UNI/SIGNATURE or AXIS ... ESP with axis carbon mask to hopefully bring the weight down to near Signature weight ...

I think we should all give Piros a massive pat on the back as he puts in so much time on here keeping us all up with the know ... & saving us from buying the wrong gear $$$

Cheers old M8 Piros

Yes Piros is doing a fair work talking about gear. I still have to be on diet to become as light footed as it need to stand up and go like a fast rabbit on that gear

Cheers Piros.

I agree watching local guys in rivermouth pumping around they look like seagulls caught in fishing nets. But each to their own I guess, that what makes foiling special.

Just had a meeting yesterday with Adrian Roper and Evan from Axis at the Paddleexpo in Germany and I can only say that a lot of cool things are coming! And also a new type of wings, different from the high aspect and the lower aspect from Axis (that will still be in the 2020 collection). Sorry I can't share any photos of the new babies
