I have the 1400 high aspect front wing and the 280 stabilizer which I can sail in fairly light winds being that I only weigh about 155lb. I can afford to buy one more front wing. My dilemma is should I get the 1040 or the 1240. Anybody use both? Is there a big difference?
I left the same message in a different thread and was told that this might be a better thread to get answers.
Suggestions welcome. Thanks

Have you looked at the Naish USA website for options?
Are you sure a low aspect SMALL foil does not suit your needs?

Hey Eldredf,

This is a great question. First of all let's get the elephant out of the room, yes I am Naish Aus.

Now, I am 6'2" and 90kg (189cm 198lbs). For your size the 1400 is a great base and you'll always be stoked to have it in your quiver. I personally prefer the 1240 over the 1040. Given my size and the conditions we usually ride in here, I find the 1040 a little pitchy and aggressive. This is basically due to the fact that being higher aspect and smaller I need more speed to get the stable loaded flight (when you're going slow it's like to touchy throttle). When I am lit and powering the 1040 is amazing, so fast and drag free. It actually delivers a ton of lift for its size and will surprise you. The 1240 for me covers so much ground. Being that little bit lower in AR and having the area, I can get loaded considerably earlier than the 1040 (Likewise the 1400 gets loaded may earlier than the 1240). For Winging the 1040 is a great choice as a wing that will cross over nicely. I personally go for the 914 when the wind kicks in hard from the 1240 or 1400. But I know Matty (also from here) who is much lighter (about 70kg / 154lbs) goes really well on the 1040. He kind of uses the 1240 and 1040 like I use the 1400 and 1240.

Now which one to buy.

This will come down largely to your ability and what you want the foil to do. Assuming you are established and pumping effectively and wanting more speed and efficiency as the cost of a little stability, go the 1040 as your weight is perfect for it. If you're still in the earlier stages of pumping and want stability over ultra efficiency, then the 1240 is the go for sure.

Remember the biggest difference in the two will be the bottom end loaded speed, stability and predictability of which the 1240 has more of both vs higher average and top speeds, freaky low drag to lift and efficiency of which the 1040 wins with.

I hope this helps a little,

regards,

JB
