I'm using the 420 axis tail (with Art999) for prone/SUP and occasional winging. After too many 'donaldson method' sandings to count, it still whistles a bit so I'm dedicating it to science and going to reshape it.

Seems many just remove the winglets and square off more or less on the edges. Can you completely reshape the tail similar to some of the newer HA tail shapes....anyone tried? Or keep it simple?

I presume there is only so much carbon you can take off store you hit the foam core? Yeh I've got a whistler (armie HA tail) but man I don't want to mess with it. Waiting for someone else to do it first.

I'm pretty sure you can take the winglets off without hitting any core material.....I thought tails were solid carbon?

just take them down in increments. The winglets are all carbon

I have hit foam when chopping my takuma kujira tail .
But it is ok, it was PVC foam (yellowish, mostly waterproof),a tiny sliver, and i sealed with several layers of superglue. You can use epoxy too.

Shaved the wing tips right down to nothing. Feels a bit better already. The sides, where the tips used to be, are basically 90 degrees to the front/back edges....but corners rounded off.

I'd like to sand in a more tapered angle from the front/middle to the edge. I really thought tails were solid carbon? Guess I'll find out soon enough....

Just chopped down a Unifoil 18" race stab to 14" for a 170 front, was full carbon, sanded it and coat the ends with clear coat for waterproofing.
Fantastic Good Friday project

Axis 460 is solid carbon, not sure about the 420. All the other older axis tails have a foam core, not sure about the new progressive ones (but being how light they are I would guess foam core as well).
