Reminds me of a song by Supertramp:

Dreamer, you know you are a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
I said dreamer, you're nothing but a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
I said "Far out, - What a day, a year, a laugh it is!"
You know, - Well you know you had it comin' to you,
Now there's not a lot I can do

Foils are going to be cheaper and cheaper with the mass production

Take the Gong foil, full prepreg carbon co-designed with the famous French fin expert Jean Jacques Deboichet for 999€, available for mor than a year already...

Note that it has a way to change the angle of attack of the stabilizer to tune it for different uses: learning / max speed, ...

But hold on what do people think it would sell for. A 14 raceboard from naish and starboard are in the 4K region already some surf sups are over 3k. This is a carbon board plus a foil ofcourse it's going to be north of 5k.

I would think custom cutting an old board you have and just getting the foil would be what most would do

Plenty of crew spending more than that a year on a race sup and a surf sup. Plenty of crew spending north of 5k a year on kite gear etc.

Expensive yeah and a niche market but there will be some in Aus with the cash that will want to give it a crack with all the hype around.

Alloy foils can be had for under AUD$1500 (Zeeko aluminium). Carbon foils are about $2800. That makes the Malolo board only $4000. Sounds expensive.

Except currently none of these foils have the low speed lift that will be required for SUP. Not yet anyway.

The board is full PVC on the bottom and race boards from the big 3 are currently $3800-$4900 so it looks to add up.

Naish look to have made some big compromises in order to keep their margins. Foils, Fin & spar all compromised and really cheap.

A SUP version of what Colas put up is the ticket. Strangely enough for the foil structure alone is similar money to the Naish offering but way, way better built. All it needs is some foils that work at lower speeds.

Save your money for now. Cheaper & (far, far) better won't be too far away...

Liquid Force foils are even cheaper and the wing is a similar shape to the Naish. I can get mine up on the foil while almost stationary. It's really slow.

Just ask any Moth sailor about the joys of foils and the hospital visits they're known for.

In fact, one of them refers to one set of foils as his 'Samurai' set.

Good plan but if NOBODY buys this kit, then Naish won't be able to achieve economies of scale to reduce price. And of course no-one else will bother to make the knock-off version of a product with no perceivable market.

At least when you buy one of these, you know its going to work ....,because its been tested...by some pretty good supers .
Some ones got to start the new Fad.good luck to anyone who buys one .Most people will pay to have a new thrill.

If you don't like the foil ,,,you will end up with a nice 10'4 single fin

funny how they didn't use the picture of the board foiling in the board advert they are selling ?maybe more boards to come .

Naish have the resources to produce a good product at a good price. If other people can do it, then Naish have then they have the buying power to produce something decent.

Question is whether greed gets in the way of a good product at a decent price...

i think that it would be bulk fun in an open ocean downwinder or at one of my local sandbar pointbreaks once you got the hang of it, but the price is a bit off putting but overly not really that bad for a board and a foil,
probably wouldn't work to well for someone of my stature at 6'3 120kg, so if anyone wants to flick one my way to borrow for a couple of months

Ha ..I just noticed something in the advert ....you don't have to wear a leash DW ing ...fancy that.??

the foil must act as a sea anchor .

after falling off.

that s freedom .

That's just so if you imbed your foil in a dugong you don't get dragged out to see when it takes off.

Good luck to anybody wanting to give this sport a go.

When Naish was promoting this Foil-board with the best all round waterman on the planet Sir Kai Lenny after just 4 miles 6.44 kilometres on Maliko Kai Lenny was spent hurting like f@#K

I don't doubt it all they are a bitch to learn on , give me another few weeks and I will post some vision of my Sup foil. Like anything it takes practice , kite foiling is hard to learn but when you see guys like in this video that JB post 2 weeks back it's effortless , the same will happen with the Sup Foil just give it time.

It was talked about on the Maliko Shuttle Bus.
My local friends on Maui told me and they know Kai Lenny and Martin his Dad very well.

I also know Kai Lenny and Martin very well I'll be asking Kai when he comes back to Town.

Well said Husq2100 It's a lot harder with Paddle Power than using a kite or being towed by a boat

Like I said Good Luck, Hope you have a very strong core strength and see if you can last longer than Kai Lenny's 4 miles

He is only using a 3.5m kite that is half the size of the other kites in that video , it shows what little power is needed to foil and his technique is so effortless. Even when he puts the kite on the water de powered he is still gliding up on the foil. Just like on a bump or a wave.

That's my point once you master it , it's very easy. It doesn't take much to get a Sup board up on the foil if you have a good bump or wave behind you, once its up it can generate its own speed.

Will a Sup Foil win Molakai one day probably not but it's still very early days , but with all the super groms from Naish & Starboard having a big crack at it , expect to see some big advancements this year. I'm focusing on paddle in bombie wave riding on them and really believe this will open up a whole new genre of Sup surfing.

i fully agree I built my own set up, only been on it twice so far with no previous foil experience, I took crashes in ways I never thought possible and they hurt alot! back out again today for a few more fingers crossed. the feeling you get flying above the wave is amazing though but its a lot further to fall than you think!

Good stuff nice looking rig and keep us posted, here's a tip try behind a boat or JetSki to get used to foil rising . Start with you feet well forward then slowly inch back and let it rise. Learn to keep the foil half way and not fully up this will help it flow through the chop. If you sit too high the front cavitates and drops.

I have used it on a cable ski but that was easy compared to with just a paddle. I havnt used it dw yet but spent a few hours surfing waves and like you say coming up mid way works good and had some super long rides. im working on a different design that should be a little more user friendly and less likely to put me in hospital.

The foil Naish is offering with the Malolo isn't the one Kay Lenny did use in the video!
We still don't know how the wings of the GoFoil looked regarding size.
I still think you need much larger wings/lift for SUP than for kite, because you have no lift/motor like a kite.

So the offered kite foil Naish is presenting looks like a, hmm, cheap trick ???

Look at the foils F-One just released for kite, Windsurf, SUP and take a look at their wings and you know what i mean.
