I've seen several hand paddle ups for DW; curious if people have found it easier to get up or harder; and if anyone's used it in small surf?
will normal swim hand paddles work or are they not wide enough area? Looking to buy some to try myself.
Mahalo!
Also interested. Probably will end up making my own but if there's something out there ready made that DOESN'T cost 150aud might consider them. Could see a thin rubbery coating on the front side, we're going to need some grip on the board deck to push off. (maybe this is a non issue?) Swim training paddles come in lots of shapes and sizes and are cheap, prbly worth an experiment.
I have not personally used them. But this is who is making the ones that Zane Westwood was using. www.instagram.com/handpaddleco/
Yeh real keen to hear from people as well on these hand paddles !!
There's a bit on the hand paddles on the latest Casey podcast.

Yea I pulled their site up early on (hand paddle co). Looks like a great product; just not sold on the price point; trying to figure out if I'm missing something unique about their design that reflects that level of markup ie for R&D; bespoke manufacturing, etc. $20(US) for some kydex and tubing or $20 for cheap swim training paddles.
I would have bought them at 50 just to try them but feel it's abit of a stretch. That said they may be worth it, hence the post.
I did play with a knee paddle today and can see the potential; particularly if you have basically double the area of a regular bladed paddle. Though you lose a significant amount of leverage created power.
Im a below average swimmer; riding marginal waves so often can only get on foil with SUP; but these may open the door to something new.
I recently tried out a new kalama board at the local break, one day with a paddle, similar next day with hand paddle co. I felt like I could catch waves at least as early with hand as with paddle, and less falling off/ stress. I found I could sit surf style facing the waves, then pop into knees, lean back, use both hands to spin fast and go in no time. Less stress on the shoulders, and the bounce paddle worked well and was satisfying. I tried it on a 1/4 mile first dw experiment, almost caught one and never fell off. The pop up starting from kneeling is different but doable.

Probably this size 4 or 5 will work well for prone DW for 1/7 of the price.
Maybe I'm missing something but
$2000ish for a downwind board
$2000ish for a foil setup
$150 hand paddles seems pretty insignificant haha
Man if I could get into this DW craze and not need one of those damn paddles I'm keen!

But see, it has to stop somewhere. Are the hand paddles worth $150 is a good question.
Is the downwind board worth $2k? It appears that yes it is. The barracuda definitely helps people with inferior paddle skills downwind. Is the foil setup worth $2k? Yes and no. There are plenty of good used and new on sale options for less than $2k. If you're in the US you can't beat an ONO swift setup for $1100. Stiff carbon mast, good high aspect wings, you can order them with a KDMaui tail. I just checked. I guess he ended the sale. It was that price for a month. The m800 is better than the swift if they are the same price. www.onofoil.com/Foils
So are the hand paddles worth the price? Someone will have to answer that eventually.
150Aud is just scratching the surface.
Before spring Black Project will put out their Hydro SprintX model Available in TEXCARBON 30T construction. They'll be $600USd... no wait, double that.... there's two of them![]()

Did you mean the All New Hydro SpankerX DW addition? Would probably be marked at $799USD because there's more surface area![]()
