Its On!
Ocean Addicts are running a hydro-foil surfing speed competition.
Foilers from all over Australia can register there PB's Heck why stop there!.. foilers from all over the world can and are encouraged to register their times.
For more info and to register go to the Ocean Addicts web site via the link bellow...

Get your name on the board. Lets see what you've got!!!!
We have a new leader! Denton from the USA
Dent took off on a Bomb and scored himself a 37.5km ride at Mavericks.
Check out his session here...
www.oceanaddicts.com.au/hydrofoiling-competition/
The bar is set high now. Bring it on!... yew!!
Luke

We are still waiting on confirmation if Denton was riding a SUP or Prone in the US at Mavericks. Pretty sure he was on a SUP though.
37.8km is smoking fast!
If you want to get your name on the leader board here is how you do it....www.oceanaddicts.com.au/hydrofoiling-competition/
Luke
Just got word from Denton. He was on a SUP! Top Speed of 37.8 km That's smoking fast on a SUP.
What speeds are you getting Piros?
Luke
We are regularly getting mid 40's but starting to question accuracy on the watch on your wrist , so now have mounted a Garmin Ultra Virb 30 camera on the board it also has speed stats . Will let you know this weekend. When you get thrown over the front it can accelerate your movement so can when you paddle and pump , but behind the boat we have got up to 45kph using the boat GPS so it is possible.

Now, that would be fun: a fastest foil rocket-launch-wipeout contest :-)

66 kph is the record to date , getting thrown over the front and got 2 stitches in my head from the board...![]()
Let's geek out on SPEED!
I have used my TRACE now for 300+ Sessions. I record the Single Maximum Speed for each session, the board, the estimated smallest wave face caught to biggest wave face caught (e.g. "today was 5 to 7 feet" for example). . . . Grouping the waves into FEET Rounding Up with average of largest and smallest (example waves from 3.5 ft - 5.5 ft = 4.5 average --> 5 Feet). I found the following comparison between FOIL Max and "PLANK" board Maximum AVERAGE speed. I now call anything that surfs using a board shape on the surface of the water PLANK Surfing ![]()
I have found that the Foil TOPS out. I have found this happens @ 23 mph/38 kmh whereas the Plank keeps going. But the PLANK too appears to have a TOP Average speed of around 27 mph/44 kmh. I have excluded outliers which typically means << 4 waves per hour often the result of huge conditions aka take out Mavericks waves. I have hit 50 kmh on a PLANK at it LIGHTS UP YOUR HAIR. Your hair feels like its buzzing. The only way to do this has been on 15 to 30 foot waves. Small waves just don't get you there.
This data includes 5+ types of PLANK boards and 4 different Foils (More below).
PS: I can't touch Piros' top speeds on a Foil. My data has been 100% wave generated on a SUP Foil. Max speed on Kai and IWA Foils ~ 40 kmh.

Further dissection of the FOILS (GoFoils) only shows an interesting result for the IWA vs. KAI foil (and Maliko 160 vs. Maliko 200)
The IWA appears to be able to sustain an Average Maximum of 22 to 23 mph in 5 to 9 foot surf (up to 38 kmh). This vs. the KAI has more of a stair-step rise until it matches the IWA wing speed at 7 foot faces. Mmmmmm ![]()
Granted I was learning when I had the KAI Foil but I have ~ 80 sessions of data across the 4 wings. This may be what makes the IWA such a fun design. It gets up and goes in small surf and keeps on trucking in the bigger stuff.
Note that the Maliko 200 Tops out around 17 or 18 mph. Granted I haven't taken it out in any bigger stuff because I would immediately switch out to the IWA.

Hi Beasho
This may seem like a simple question and I suspect I know the answer but perhaps not. The recorded maximum speed referenced is to the "fixed" ground. My understanding is that on a large wave the water is rushing "up" the face of the wave. Is your speed relative to the surface of the water significantly faster than the recorded speed?
cheers
Bob

Yes: The GPS is recording relative to "Fixed" and Horizontal ground. So if you were dropping down a 45 degree angle you would multiply the Horizontal speed by 1/Cosine 45 = 1.4X faster.
The maximum of "PLANK" speed above may have more to do with the maximum speed of the WAVE vs. the actual surf board as shown here. Note this math is all for HORIZONTAL speed and does NOT incorporate 3-Dimensional DROP speed discussed above.

Thanks Beasho,
Good explanation and why it feels like we are moving much "faster" than our GPS is recording. We are indeed moving faster! I think it is the acceleration, especially with the initial drop that is so addictive.
Cheers

Hey Piros,
We are not counting or looking at any Tow in speeds. Strictly paddle power onto a wave. www.oceanaddicts.com.au/hydrofoiling-competition/
Regularly hitting 40kms on the east coast dose have me questioning the device that you are using to measure your speed. That dose not seem quite right? But if it is you are absolutely killing it! Yew!
Get your pic up on our page of your speed and I will get your name on the leader board!
Luke
We have a tie for first place!! Artess Hamasaki scores himself a smoking fast 37.8 km ride at Ala Moana Courts in Hawaii.
Congratulations Artess that is incredibly fast!!
He almost got you Denton... so close!
The boys in the US are setting the bar high! The battle is on.
Keep up to date and register your top speed here...www.oceanaddicts.com.au/hydrofoiling-competition/
Stay tuned.
Luke

Congratulations Piros your on top buddy!!......www.oceanaddicts.com.au/hydrofoiling-competition/
Well done mate!

Ran this over 3 days similar speed Kai Go Foil. NE Cyclone swell. 42.3 Km/h Sup paddle in .
Piros: At one point you suggested the Kai foil was collecting dust. Mine is in that stage now. Why did you switch back to the Kai?
I suspect it was for larger swell. My love for the IWA has bumped the Kai foil to the safety/backup position. The only reason I might grab it would be if I knew there was consistent large swell. BUT I was flying the IWA in 11 ft @ 12 second waves and it was great. A bit hot on takeoff but once I was up I was able to hop from peak to peak. Here was a 512 yarder up to 23.2 MPH, 37.6 kmh on the IWA.
Note: The grey line shows the flight. The cool thing about flying the bigger swell is the speed I hit 300 yards into the ride. The maximum speed was hit on takeoff, the drop, then gliding well out into the "open ocean" zone. No One in the World is Surfing this section. The second arrow shows where I hit 22.9 mph, or 99% of my takeoff speed. I had to work to keep the nose down, essentially touching down the rail, to prevent over-foiling mid-flight. Average speed for the whole ride was 26.6 kmh.

That's pretty impressive stats Beasho , yeah I'm definetly riding the Kai more now I find overall it's a faster foil and definetly heaps easier on bigger drops. We tend to get more wind with bigger swell and I was getting flogged on the take offs on the IWA.
Because we surf in a group we have multi riders on same wave some with Kai some with IWA's , the Kai's are actually faster on the wave they don't drop back untill the wave starts to die plus the IWA will pick up smaller waves easier. I can turn the Kai harder and can ride it higher with more confidence. The one big downside is the Kai's lack of pump compared to the IWA .
I believe Standy has topped this one some months ago on the Malolo. Need to update the leader board.
JB
Yep we have a new leader!
Well done to Andy Davies scoring him self a smoking fast ride that puts him on top!
