Two great clips to watch/ listen to in your spare time. New GO//FOIL gear lands in oz this week, also more Kalama boards coming in a few months
Long interview but great find. He even covers GPSSS and the great watch debate.

Worth watching the whole interview. I like how Alex talk about why he and Alan Cadiz ride waves windsurfing style instead of flagging the wing. Also tips on speed winging.
Great interviews, thanks for posting the links!
Interesting hearing Kalama saying they sit or knee paddle the new narrower boards until outside and ready to catch a bump.
Can someone post a video of this please. Cannot find any. Doesn't make sense to me, especially in cross off conditions. I really like the ability to flag the wing.
Alex has pretty strong opinions about foil size and tail size and rider weight and usage. Some of it is a little counterintuitive. For example, he's says everybody should be on the GT foils (which makes sense) and should be riding the 20" tail for all but the smallest wings.
It's a pity they don't offer all this on the web site. It would make it less of a lucky dip when you're trying to decide which sizes to buy.
I think he should emphasize that 20 FTL tail more. I got one last night and took it today in knee high florida wind chops - thing blew my mind. Revolutionary imho compared to flip tips.

Surfing or downwinding and what front wing. Obvious question but how did it help?

I think he's way off base on that. Being on the island, with good waves, they're riding the GT/NL type stuff thats slower inorder to keep from outrunning the power on powerful, organized, waves. I'd also say that their waves are more geard to big drawn out turns, hence the giant stabs. When you ask them about what to ride for less fantastic surf they recomend the bigger sizes of that stuff because they assume the smaller, more garbage wave is going to result in "less performance", however the reality is the opposite. In garbage conditions your rarely staying with one line for more than a few seconds so speed is more valuable to connect multiple sections and makr it out of bad situations. Alex would probably say i'm working too hard on my RS 1000 and 13in tail at 220 lbs, but i'm making sections that i wouldn't on a slower wing. Speed generation (RS) vs speed control (GT).
I would also say, that pumping around and connecting on a small wing like the 1000 is only dooable after being a pump master on the bigger high aspects. You can't just jump to it or skip steps. The bigger, HA, pump monsters were a necessary step to really dial in pumping to get there and the big low aspects are a necessary step to get to the big HA stuff. He might also be assuming that if your asking for advice thats a sign your not ready for the faster stuff.
Maybe its just island elitism. The guy acts like he INVENTED foiling.

I agree w you here. I have the gt1250 and Rs 1150 and ride in mostly gutless Florida prone surf conditions. I got the 14.5 originally and recently 12.5 both FTS. I find the less drag of the 12.5 is faster and pumps and turns better w less cardio. Still want to explore this some more but def what I'm feeling now. Maybe for shore runners w the 14.5 and the Rs on small days?
Ha ... if GoFoil had a marketing dept, I imagine they'd be scrambling after this talk!
His comments about using a bigger longer tail were interesting. In all the various combinations of wings I have been attempting, I realized I've not tried switching the pedestal, as I have always run the short flat on my prone board and long flip tip on my sup/wing. I had a brief session yesterday when I tried the long 17 on my prone for the first time, with the NL190 ... wow, what a different ride, especially for pumping. The longer cadence and increased lift feels like it may help unlock the elusive pump game for me. I am now wondering if my struggles with proning the PNL185 might be addressed with this bigger tail?
I am on the wait list for a FTS14.5, to go with an RS1150. I am now curious to try the FTL14.5. The FTL20 seems pretty extreme, but would be interesting to see how it feels.

Same here, I got a cheap used 17" flip tip specifically in anticipation for the RS1150 to complement the FTL14.5 and see what would be
the difference when pumping. If the impact is as dramatic as withthe 460 tail (18")on my Axis 1010, I may try the new 20"FTL though
I have a feeling it might be too big for the 1150.
Would it kill GoFoil to put that kind of info on their website
The 460 tail is money for pumping the 1010 as noted on the Axis website.

I'm of the opinion that nuances of shape are really seccondary to measurable items like thickness, width, chord, and angle, expecially with tail wings. I personally like as loose a setup as possible so i only run flat tails(no yaw stability( - so all the FT stuff is out for me. I'm of the opinion that the old GF stuff has way too much tail down (i cut several degrees ot of mine and its great) If the FT stuff is FANTASTIC my guess is its just mounted at a more appropriate angle. If someone has one and wants to throw on an angle gauge vs the fuse i'd be curious.

AnyBoard that was supfoil surf on unbroken maybe knee high wave. The most obvious was the pump - I am not a good pumper - I usually would get maybe one 2for1 in a session of lets say 20-25 waves. Last night I had probably 7-8 2for1s in the same overall wave count. It is not even in the same ball park with flip tips. I am in the part of florida with the ****tiest weakest waves ever on the Gulf of Mexico. We never have a ground swell - only wind chop. So for me this ftl20 is the game changer. I was riding GL240 - that tail made it quite nimble and super smooth.
