Looks to be a few off the shelf kite board foil systems available out there.

For example see: www.kingofwatersports.com/product/f-one-kitefoil-2016/fone-2016-kite-foil?refpage=kitesurf-foil-boards

Would bolting one of these onto a paddleboard (in the right place) do the trick too?

It's a big risk. Kiteboards are much faster than SUP's so chances are:

A) the foil section is inappropriate (not enough lift) for a SUP because of the speed difference between SUP and Kite
B) the size of the foils is inappropriate (too small) for a SUP because of the speed difference between SUP and Kite
C) both of the above.

Proper foil design is largely governed by the Reynolds number (a calculation) for the foil and what you want from it (high lift or low drag). The Reynolds number depends a lot on the speed of the object in question, so a supersonic jet fighter will have a different Reynolds number to a 10 seat passenger aircraft and hence their wing sections are very different. The same applies here. Similarly, the foil will need to change depending on how much it has to lift. So if Kai Lenny is 60kg wringing wet, an 85kg paddler isn't going to see the same performance on the same foil arrangement.

That's why things like foiling moths (sailing boats) have typically 3 sets of foils depending on how much wind there is or isn't. The less wind, the bigger the foil set.

Sweet. Thanks. The thought of which $3k foil system to fit to which board for that day on top of what paddle to use is enough to kill the romance for me!

You may find the $60k for a foiling Moth with 3 sets of foils & fully tricked up a bit of a romance killer too Hawaiiheke!

Ahh yes. $60k would cover 4x4, trailer and SUP rack and a quiver of every board I could conceivably want! #whywouldyoushelloutforamoth

Strangely enough, there's still a 6 month waiting list for a Mach 2.... at $35k for the basic boat.

Foils only used to cost $15. From Cobra? Definitely Goanna. Funded many Balinese surf trips in the early 1970s apparently, according to 'The Wicky' and many more of the Lorne older generation to whom I used to listen to spellbound. Veracity unverified. ?? The foils definitely did improve performance perception but severely slowed down everything else except uncontrolled giggling?????????.
