Hey team.
Wanting to purchase a prone board to use with foildrive to use in surf. Confident sup foiler..90kgs on an Armstrong set up.
From talking to guys looks like 5ft or less is the sweet spot fir board length and any from 35L - 65L
First time proner..so was looking for something to start off with..not too much of a challenge but still want the prone surf feel vs on sup foil board.
Looking at KT Quatro 5'2 x 26 x 80L or the Amundson Rocket Fish 4'10 x 23.5 x 65L.
These have plenty of volume..did think about a 50Lish board
Any other board recommendations for my weight are welcome.
Thanks

Friend at 60K has a 60L 5'x23" board with a foildrive mounted on back that works for him. I tried it (I'm 80K) and I was submerging the drive too much to get going. It kept cutting out on me. I think the board size would have been ok if it had more volume. Even my 110L board will cut out in rough chop. If you mount drive on nose or in backpack (as Hdip just posted in another thread) you might have more success than me.
Thanks man
yip.box will be mounted at the front of board. Most guys have this set up.on FD group page and are on 35+Liish boards.
Don't want too much width, hard to get the arms around. I'm fairly wide in the shoulders and 25" is about maximum.
Yeah watched all Doms videos.they are excellent. From memory at 82kgs he started on a 75L then to 60L now on 35L I think. Very informative and always makes it look easy. Weighing up volume vs length I guess. Dominic mentioned he dropped from 5'3 to 4'9 and it was a significant improvement in swing weight.
I'm planning on using the throttle and paddling as well ( as best i can with remote in hand) at take off to help with getting up to plaining speed
How tall are you?
im 180cm and can just squeeze myself onto a 4'2" 32 litre prone with FD mounted on the nose
I have successfully efoiled on flat water and waiting for the big east coast swells to die down so I can try out in surf/waves

I'm 182cm..i know I could probably go smaller and less volume but I'm mindful of draining battery quicker plus i like it to be not too harder learner curve...that's why I was looking for larger volume boards... I'm assuming the are a little more forgiving .
Get a cheap bigger board to start and then move down in size when your skills develop.
Thanks Hilly..what you think the boards I've mentioned and their specifications for my 90kgs ..hard to get cheap good gear here but I'm happy to spend coin for the board that gives me the best fit for now ...I know eventually I probably will downsize from either of these two boards
Cheers

My point was if you have a small sup board or similar you can beg-borrow-steal and get the skills up it will save you heaps. Learning curve will be steep and everyone else says they went from this to this to this. Might save you some coin in the long run. Prone skills are the most important part of this dilemma ![]()
Forgot to add I will prone my wingding board to learn. 5 4 105l for my 105ish kegs ![]()
Thanks Hilly definitely ...if i went the larger 5'2 x 80L will it still feel like prone surfing and different to my Armie 115L sup board.
At 72kg, I'm a bit lighter than you, but I use the Amundson Uncle Nubby 5'2" x 23" x 62L board for everything- prone, wing & Foil Drive. Still working out battery placement with the Foil Drive, but it seems to work well on the toe side rail between my feet. The swing weight is definitely noticeable, but I can live with it.
If you have a 115L sup you should just try that before buying anything else. Decide for yourself. Also consider at 90kg the foildrive is going to have quite a bit less power than someone smaller. My buddy at 20kg less than me pops up way way easier!!
Thanks man..I have tried prone both my sups at over 100L x 28 wide..very doable but still felt like I was surfing a sup board just without the paddle..which made it quite slow .
Cheers
At 82kg I could easily prone my 5'4" x 24" 58L SMIK
Very easy to duck dive and easy to catch waves, not too wide to paddle.
I learnt stinkbug on this board for winging and thought it would be my "one board do all" but I found the semi sinker nature of this board (-24) was too much work and I should have something with a bit more volume to conserve energy so I bought a 5' x 23" 72l (-10) board
I've now got 3 dedicated boards, 2 of which I run FoilDrive Plus
32l prone board with FoilDrive on the nose
72l wing board - I've tried running FoilDrive on a semi sinker wing board and for me it doesn't work, way too much going on and I've come to the realisation that if it's windy enough to do a water start/stinkbug then it's windy enough to not need FoilDrive
incoming 105l Kalama 6'1" x 23" downwind - I will mount the FoilDrive on the tail as close to the mast/back foot as possible. This will be my light wind wingboard, SUP foil board and learn to downwind board.
Finding the right board length, width and volume for your own needs is not a simple task and it can be overwhelming with all the reviews and recommendations. You really need to be prepared to "experiment" and spend $ to get into a happy place.
I would say err on the side of volume/length as the struggle of not being able to get up on foil by paddling, wave, wind or FoilDrive is frustrating and you end up with a board you won't/can't use which is not an efficient use of your resources, financially and time wise.

Awesome man
Yeah so hard to get it right and probably won't first time. Lots of different views on it. My priorities are to get up and riding waves with the FD+ mounted...happy to get a starter board but I know I will probably drop down once I get it sorted. It's really comes down to a few boards..the KT has now gone..but I have the option of
Amunson Rocket Fish 4'10 65L..I mentioned above..some have said the short length will be an issue getting speed up at my weight even with the FD on and battery will drain quick.
Freedom Wingnut 5'3 x 90L..obviously alot of volume but might be good to start with this and I'm assuming better battery life. It is thick and 26.5" wide tho but i guess that helps with stability. Hoping is feels like I'm not riding my 115L sup foil board tho...want to do I few good turns and smooth carves.
Jimmy Lewis Flying VM 5'0 x 24 x 75L - I guess a compromise of both boards
Thanks again.
