There is no international judging criteria for surf foil, each counrty or even orgniser does his own thing.

In France I'm working with the French surfing Federation to get something, just like shortboard, longboard, etc...
We took the shortboard criteria (but made for surf foiling), but included the pumping back out with two waves connections max, which means one ride can be 3 waves ridden.

I'm surprised there is not much going on regarding surf foiling comp?tition.

Thanks for your reply, I did find some info on a Hawaiian comp page, beach n board fest, and thinking their comp is a completely different to the port Stephen's sup challenge. And surfing nsw hasn't included sup surf foiling in their rule book.

Agreed - in most other new disciplines there would have been several associations offering World Championships by now.

Why stuff up a good thing with a comp?

I like competition, it is not only about being the best, not only about results.

It is more about having many people doing the same thing, pushing each other, learn new things (gear, technique, etc...), meet new people, getting better just riding with better riders, etc...

It is not for everybody, I understand some people are not into it, but some really like the vibe, especially for a new sport, usually the vibe is cool, lots of interesting talks, etc...

In our local club we run Foil surf comps. It is open to Prone and SUP in the one category and works really well.

It works similar to a snowboard run in some ways, or a skate park run.

You get 3 minutes from the second you get on foil.
Only one rider in the area at a time.
There is 3 judges that judge based on intensity of run, innovation of manoeuvres, placement on waves, use of the foil, use of the wave, connections to improve the ride and so on.
It is much harder than you'd think and the pressure is on to perform in 3 minutes. With the likes of James Casey, Zane Westwood and Tim Carroll in our events, they are spectacular. We generally commentate each rider and the public love watching it. It is super action packed and a lot of fun.
Short run, one person only is great as there's no fear of interference of collisions, you can use the entire area really showcasing the sport for what it can do.
Some of the best runs may only have 1 or 2 good turns on a wave each, but a wave transfer each time, soo cool.

Happy to run through some more with anyone if you wish to implement, as there's quite a bit of finner details, but this is the basic of it. works well.

Ride safe,

JB

While we are talking comps if you are entering a sup surfing comp can you ride a sup with foil. Its just a bigger fin after all. Might have to check with the judges but its hard work going out without a foil after 3 years.

Interesting.

We choose to stay in the same format as surfing to make thing easier and it works too.
Actually I think having two different formats would be nice. I see one keeping the surfing spirit, more tradintional, no strap, more about riding the wave.
And I see another one, more like an air show, with or without strap, big airs, back flip etc...

I think being in traditional surfing style/SUP, they juts enter the existing SUP heat. The format we have adopted is to show how different it is and really show case the sport.

I think comp helps pushing the sport, but it has to be in the right direction.
