First damaged foil. I'm reasonably handy with surfboard repair. Just wondering if I should sand back to the crack in paint on top side then epoxy all with cloth from underneath....then sand and shape?

Photos look a bit worse than what it is. Ding/crack extends only about 4cm in. Thank you for any guidance.

I had that brand and found them very easily damaged so we just kept repairing them as needed pretty much as you plan.

Just grind it down till no more cracks and do staggered layers of 6oz carbon (longest one last). Do top first and let it overhang but not sag , use peel ply and don't trim off . Let it dry and turn over and do the same , again don't trim until dry then sand and fair the 2 sides being very careful to keep the shape of the leading edge . The overlap let's you shape the trailing edge back to how it was without sanding through . Be clean and careful laying up , prevention is better than cure . So use a heater and pre heat the wing but not too hot (otherwise foam core can release gas causing bubbles ) keep the room warm in this cold weather , epoxy hates the cold . Grab a few beers and watch the drying process and wipe away any runs or drips (again saves lots of sanding ) Remember use peel ply will save you an hour of sanding . The NP's are a pretty solid build so don't be scared to key it in.

I would probaly just round both tips off, untill the damaged area is gone. Then it will be more difficult to damage next time. And seal area up with a coat of epoxy.

And repair the crack.

Thanks all. Some different takes on it which I appreciate.
Piros: You have the look of a man possessed hacking that np wing apart. Many thanks for the extensive detail!

Assume using carbon Vs fibreglass cloth us the carbon is stronger/less brittle.....but a bit more effort to work with?

Yes definitely carbon , once wet out it's much easier to work in . As I said above do top first and over lap then you can fill in the missing section on the newly laid top sheet , don't round the wing tips off. The repair will be very strong , I've done it heaps even reattached completely severed wing tips on other foils.

Thanks Piros. Just ordered some carbon fibre cloth. Epoxy best with it? Never worked with carbon cloth before.....yes, I'm a virgin....

Interesting Rob - how did you join the sections?

I used timber doles as a locator but the strength is not from that it's the stepped triple layer of 6 oz carbon . Keying in those layers is very strong . That wing is still going strong even after multiple bottom strikes . Peel ply not only saves sanding but stops you sanding away the carbon lay up , it's the poor mans vacume bag. The wing put on very little weight . Draping the carbon over the wing and not trimming let's you lay up against it from the over side and shape in. That's how I faired in the trailing edge .

It didn't break I cut 25mm out of each side and reattached. To take it from a medium to a small . I also cut down the 16" rear to 12 inches . Out of all the wings I ridden the NP Slim is still one of the best top 5 . It's just a shame NP is out of action at the moment . They still are developing the new large and small slim . Just couldn't wait so made my own .

That's great to hear that NP is still alive and developing new foils. Those of us with glide surfs are still waiting for the XL and Med Slim wings to become available, it's been over a year! Any word when those wings will finally make it to market?

I failed to specify the USA market - glad you are enjoying them down south! Carbon mast is also highly anticipated - looks amazing!

I just had a closer look at that broken tip and it looks like the whole area is just a lump of black resin with no cloth at all in it. Not surprising that it cracked. You should take it back to the retailer. Looks like its very poorly constructed

Great stuff Rob!
There's going to be a lot of very nervous front wings next time they hear a jigsaw crank up!
