It is real. I know of a lot of people "suffering" from it :-)

But like all diseases or addictions, some are immune to it: I am, and I know some others. We are all different, and also it depends on your local conditions.

See this is the first part of Foil Brain and I think you might have it bad.

1st sign is denial and telling others that you don't have it and are immuned. Not looking good for you mate.

I think you get it as you get better and figure out your first half price foil and six foot, 10kg surfboard do not cut it.

And then the buying adventure begins.

Since starting prone foiling, I have not touched a kite for 12 months, sold my normal surfboards - kites are next.

It is not denial. It is just an objective look at facts: my session log.
2 foil sessions in 2019. Both times were because all the good SUP/surf spots where too crowded due to the tide/swell combo.

Basically, it comes down to the fact: if you have conditions where you can foil or SUP without crowds, what do you choose? I SUP.
And when you can foil and not SUP... well, it happened twice for me in 2019...

This works both ways.

When your 7'8" SUP boards weights 4.8kg (without pad nor fins), the idea to bother with the foil gear is not very attractive. And such a SUP on a wave gives me more fun than a foil. Especially when walking/paddling some kilometers give you access to deserted peaks, why bother with all this gear to carry.

This said, from the people I know, I see less people SUP foiling. They either moved on to surf foiling, on the quest of the smallest board possible, or quit SUP foiling altogether (but most of them Wing foil instead).

Foil-brain is real. I've got a terminal case. From Day 1. Then recently the challenge and stoke of moving from SUP Foil to prone kicked it up to another level. My surfboards, SUPs, OC1 are lonely and collecting dust. This week, I took delivery of the Axis ultra-short fuse and 370 stab. Total revelation- so fast and responsive and pumps a dream! Still flogging at the pump game, but managed to link my first 2 for 1, so that aspect of foiling feels reachable. Unfortunately... 2 days ago I late dropped a head high wave- launched over the falls and jacked up my ribs. Foiled yesterday anyhow but within an hour after getting out of the water- I felt like a horse kicked me- could hardly breath. Damn- guess I've no choice but to give it a break. Conditions look glassy and perfect this morning... already losing my mind.... sooooo frothing to give the new setup a good fly.

I understand your argument about dragging around foil gear. TICK. I hate carry the SUP/foil, pulling apart the foil, putting together the foil.
But the upside is the time on the water.

We have had a big uptake in both SUP foil and Prone foil riding. Been massively assisted by the owner of the local kite/SUP/wing/foil store being an enthusiastic participant in the madness with us.

I spent most of my time kite foiling the last four/five years, but started SUP foiling this year because of the average winter wind. So I progressed from 800cm2 kite foils to 2000cm2 surf foils. There were about 10 foils used in that progression/learning phase. But a lot of the progression was also related to the gear manufactures producing better products.

The original aluminium LF fish/foil combo was a great learning device, but the Slingshot was so much better. And Zeeko Carver was a massive improvement over both of those .... etc etc etc

Then you want to improve your carving ability ..... so the LF fish, gets replaced by Shinn Paipo, then a Naish Hover 155, Naish Hover 130 etc etc

Then you want to maximize your time on the water, so you start pairing light wind boards with big wings.

Naturally I graduated to winging as well, so now the 2000cm2 gets used for SUP foiling, kiting and winging (paired with the appropriate board for the wind/wave conditions).

It is all fun.

Of course it's real, thank God for unlimited download,as previously stated I've developed a foot fetish thanks to foil brain.Watching all foil videos I say "look where his feet are". I have also developed two new Olympic diving styles "swan dive 3/4 pike with face plant and my favorite Moonshot, backslap with neck jar.Recieved a Xmas card from my chiropractor, holidaying in the Swiss alps, thanking me for my patronage. My kids have brought me a new impact vest for Xmas.My wife has increased my life insurance policy and looking a villas with in the south of France.I now drag my knuckles on the ground thanks to my other new toy,a wind foil, use to whinge about the summer nor, easterers now I pray for them.I was once a very comfortable self funded retiree now I'm on the government pension. This is all due to FOIL BRAIN,those that say it's not real don't foil. The only benefit of FOIL BRAIN is the weight loss.

FOIL BRAIN also makes you dress funny it's a sight to behold seeing me walk down the beach with my Naish hover, my wind wing wearing footy socks and soccer shin pads. After falling off 23 times in 10 minutes and not being the sharpest tool in the shed,I keep forgetting the foil it there and kick it with my shins.
