I can kite foil and do on foil jibes in my good direction
Now want to SUP foil .
I am 75kg have a Naish mid wing but think bigger would be better to learn SUP foil?
I saw an 1800 sq cm Axis and it looked fantastic but now hear the Naish SUP foils will be 50% lighter.
Help please as ready to buy.
Sorry to butt in, I'm looking to get a foil to downwinders here in Perth/Mandurah.
73 - 86! kg mainly a surfer but do SUP an 8"2 widebody JP in the surf when it's mushy.
Not so much into Sup Surfing but love Downwinders on the ski.
Have saved a few dollars to get into this fad (ha)

If you want to get in to DW then get a big wing like the 280 from Gofoil, this will make learning far easier unless you maybe live in Maui where you can use the smaller 200.
Naish and Axis have bigger wings now or coming so these could be good and plenty others coming out as well so will be lots of options.
I have used the Gofoil and know it works well so more than happy to say it.

I agree with paul.j.... we have foils & boards available to... I'm taking both the M200 & M280 to Maui for downwinding...
Hey Warwickl,
Seeing you already have the Thrust Surf M, it is really easy to look at expanding it's capabilities by just simply adding wings.
For small surf and at your light weight of 75kg, I'd say just go for the Thrust Surf Large. It is super maneuverable, light and easy to manage. The XL wings are fantastic, but they're just that "XL". Unless you're planning to ride unbroken waves or ocean swells, you'll enjoy the Large more IMO. Especially once you start turning and carving. Also at 75kg, you'll be surprised at the lift you'll get and DW is totally possible on it.
I love using the XL wings, and probably use then a little too much, but I get blown away when I jump back onto my Large by how much faster and more nimble it is.
All this said, of coarse with the Thrust system, everything is totally interchangeable too. You can add a third wing later also (XL or L), or add carbon masts, longer masts, Abracadabra and so on.
I hope this helps,
Ride safe,
JB

A few more questions.
I have a 70cm mast so will it be ok or should I get a 55cm mast?
Also is my stabiliser wing ok or do I need to change it?
How much lighter are the new wings compared to my heavy medium wing?
The Axis impressed me as wings are very light.

Thanks for the advice. Maui looks so insane if I can get up foiling here in Perth I will make a trip to one of these iconic downwind runs.

Stay with the 70cm mast. I don't like 55 and am disappointed they didn't at least make 60cm standard for 2019 in aluminum. They did make 60cm standard in carbon. Some people like short masts for quicker reactions and redirections than longer, but longer pumps better and breaches less.
Stab wings are the same size except for the XL wing.
The new wings are listed as 50% lighter. My L foil weighs 8 lbs 2 oz with 55 cm mast on my scales. It's about what Cloud 9 foils weigh. I think everyone is coming in at mid 8 lbs for 2019.

Good information.
Do you think the large or XL would be best for me at 75kg SUP foil beginner in small to full waves with ok skill kite foiling.

Large for sure. XL wing is odd man out. Meaning M and L feel the same turning, so it's easy to go between the two. The L just flies earlier and it's the most universal size.
The XL is so big, it's stiffer turning and it throws my instincts off. The XL almost feels like a down wind wing to me.
I'm 185 lbs. the Large will continue to be my everyday choice. It's magic.

Hey Warwickl,
You can totally ride with your existing rear wing on either the L or XL, especially for surfing (I sometimes use the STD Rear on the XL for surfing to loosed it up a bit). The XL rear is really just beneficial for unbroken swells and pumping (it gives a very power pumps), but it also stiffens up the surfing aspect of things.
As for the Mast, if you're already riding comfortable and confidently on the 70cm, then I'd stay there. I use 70cm as standard for me, however the 55cm can be good to have in your quiver for shallow areas and reefs. Some top riders like Matt Levings prefer the 55cm mast as it is super reactive and responsive for fast and drastic direction changes. But it does also reduce your sweet spot for glide, especially on bumpy and choppy days.
The 2019 Thrust Surf wings are approx. half the weight of the original Malolo and Thrust wings respectively. Most importantly with going lighter they have still retaining all their strength. I hit a reef head square on last week (literally threw me into ankle deep water/reef), and the damage was surprisingly minimal, a little epoxy fill here and there and quick sand, all done in 10 minutes. I am not sure other wings would have come out so well.
I hope all this information helps, good luck with the journey, and enjoy the glide,
Ride safe,
JB
After posting I thought of another analogy for the wing sizes in reference to surfing. I'll use the NAISH wings as they're on topic.
The XL Wing is a lot like a mal or logger. Great bottom end and suited to fatter slower waves. Maneuverability is not the main key point but great for cruising on waves normally UN-rideable on other surf craft.
The Large is a lot like a your step down or performance fish. Loose, fast and able to ride a large variety of waves. Great power to size ratio and in general for larger riders all that is needed for most waves. Great to carve and draw epic lines with.
The Medium is more like your performance shortboard. Super fast and nimble, loose as a goose and able to do turns at ridiculous speeds and handle much bigger waves and way more speed then the others. Also a great wing to cross over to kiteboarding.
All the wings are fun, and they all deliver different attributes, so decide on which one is going to give you what you want out of your glide.
I hope this helps,
JB

About to purchase new xl wing setup already have large thrust setup snd wasn't sure on 55 or 70cm mast as already have a 55 and 90, what would be preferable for downwinding ?55 or 70 and in fatter ocean bumps
This morning was just the perfect conditions for a beginner.
Board is a converted JP 82 x 32in super stable foil Naish XL and 55cm mast.
First 2 waves were entertaining for others. Then it clicked with the next 20 plus waves all about 30m plus rides near perfect for a beginner.
Back for more tomorrow.

You were up and riding on your third wave? And you rode the next 20? Boy, I am doing something wrong... It must be my foil, it couldn't be me ![]()

A bit more.
I learnt kite foiling all last season in flat water plus I had had 2 attempts at SUP foiling previously but fat waves and caught next to nothing.
Yesterday the conditions were beginner perfect plus the XL wing is super stable and made it easy.
Also I was very motivated to succeed before I turn 72 in September.
Today should be good as well then that's it till wind and surf drops again.
I strongly recommend starting on the biggest wings.
Yesterday 10 out of 10 for beginner surf - today 1 out of 10 surf. Got 2 ok the rest I got done in close out waves and turbulence.
