Help appreciated- motor is well maintained , new plugs , new fuel , carby cleaned , will fire on first pull but then nothing. Plugs wet when removed( fuel o.k.? ) tried reducing plug gap - no effect. Just about at the limit of my knowledge. Can multi meter be used to check power supply ?Advice welcomed .
Well I don't know to much about outboards but If the motor starts for a few seconds then dies and the plugs are wet i believe you have a flooding problem which indicates that either the float in the carby is is not doing it's job in allowing the correct flow of fuel because it is jamming or set incorrectly or more likely the carby needle is sticking. Who cleaned the carby? You need to strip the carburettor to clean it properly otherwise crud will jam things up. You can buy carburettor kits which include new needle and seat but you need to know what you are doing.
When this happened on the old fords you would give the carburettor bowl a few firm taps with a large spanner to dislodge the needle if stuck. , dry the plugs , leave plugs out and let the combustion chamber dry out of excess fuel for a while. This happens regularly with my old tt mower and i give the carby a wack or two with a spanner get it started give it full throttle for 30 secs. and all's good till next time.
Years ago I bought a new 6hp Yamaha 2 stroke that did a similar thing. Back at the workshop they told
me only half the magneto was working (??) the problem was electrical not fuel.
Information much appreciated. I'm leaning towards carby. The carby cleaner was injected thro' air inlet and I now think that it may not have cleaned jets properly. Will be in Two Fold Bay for Xmas and propose to completely strip carby ( all be it , with a heap of photos !! )Best wishes to you all, for a great holiday!
Check the needle and seat is assembled correctly. We had that motor where the top of the needle was disconnected due to improper assembly. She wouldnt run after that. Easily fixed though. Mechanic thought it must have been an assembly error.
I have an older one with a similar problem. Would start with some effort but would stall when engaging gear. Found the problem was the spark plug leads that were shorting out where they lay on the bottom of the outboard body. Separated the leads from the body with a bit of insulation and it now works fine.
