I'm so surprised how few yachts go social cruising in our bay, we go out regularly over nite, or for a few days and rarely see another cruising yacht on the horizonn
if any other yachties would like to form a social cruising group and hook up regularly and cruise in company or just meet-up and have a group meet, give me a call and we can organise a regular cruising forum each month.
We are a large cat and often sail into bass strait locations, but mostly in home waters, - interested? Contact me !!

Maybe no other boats because you are breaking lock down rules?

Love sailing dinghys in Westernport. We sail from Balnarring beach in Jan-March. Perhaps people are put off by the water depth variation at the top of the bay? Think that is where I will head once this lockdown eases and we can go sailing again. A week of solitude away from family is very appealing at the moment.

......maybe morskiwilk was referring to times sailing before the lockdown?
I do regular overnight or mini cruises around Port Phillip picking my weather windows and choosing anchorages that suit the wind direction for that night. Most comments on forums are negative about cruising here but ive found it simply delightful. Evenings anchored in Neoian Bay just inside the heads at Point Nepean or under the cliff at Martha point in a gentle northerly or easterly. A week at Melbourne City Marina for White Night Festival or overnight at Brighton or Queenscliff any time. I suppose having a 1.2 meter draught helps with finding an overnight spot to drop the pick.
We plan taking the boat to a mooring at Flinders and doing the same around Westernport soon but this summer will be a trip to Wilsons Prom area for a cruise now that the wooden boat festival in Hobart has been postponed.

About 6 years ago used to sail Aquarius23 from Yaringa , hardly see any yachts than.
Maybe, one of the reason , atrocious current and marginal holding all around French Is. EndI up in the mud few times, than I borrowed small old admiralty anchor, than was good night sleep.
There is a book Sailing Westernport.

Balnarring Beach is such a lovely spot. Used to live there in a little cottage called Tulum Sands. At the time we had a 15 ft clinker dingy on a mooring there. Good whiting and gummy fishing, and i even saw a school of tuna round up some baitfish against the reef and the shore. Small salmon or pilchards I suppose. This was last century around 1990.
Theres a book by Richard Wilkins ( from memory ) called creeks and rivers of westernport that had good info. Maybe creeks and rivers was a subtitle. Was that the book?
A heavy admiralty anchor is out main anchor. It was recommended to me for our trips to the Furneaux group. We has a smaller one for a stern anchor and a good sized danforth.

That must be why the dolphins are often there. The seem to like swimming alongside and they really like it when the horses swim in the mornings.
I have seen that book, from the Library, he also has one for Port Phillip and one for the Gipsland lakes. cant find any mention on-line now though. They had some mention of tidal flows which don't seem to be covered anywhere else in much detail.
From my Library catalogue "Creeks and harbours of Western Port" Richard Hawkins. Now I have to wait till the Library opens again...
