Some interesting reading from Terry Hart (Vagrant) whose career in the BOM generated an interest in abrupt wind changes in the northern waters of Port Phillip Bay.
A 20-year wind analysis of data from Fawkner Beacon revealed on average there were about 12 cases each year where there was a wind speed change of 16 knots or more in half an hour or less and in 4 cases the change was more than 30 knots.
Click on the links to find out more about 'Two stage' changes in winds and abrupt increases in speed of northerly winds where there is little change in wind direction.
