Hi,
I see this post by Cabron but there was no answer to which caulking is good for the toe rail.

I have a wooden toe rail which I need to varnish. I then wanted to run a bead along it. More fore aesthetic purposes than to keep water out. It also looks like a bead of caulking was run in the past and this has cracked in places and been varnished over and its now just a long bead of grit.
It will have to be compatible with Kiwigrip as there will be parts where it contacts the kiwi grip.
I am not so keen on Sikaflex as it will crack and is not UV stable. I was even thinking Butyl Mastic and accepting it wont last that long and stuff might stick to it.
The Life Calk product looks good but postage is $40!.
Any recommendations on a suitable caulk to use would be good.
Its an old boat so it doesnt have to be perfect and will blend in with all the other imperfections.
If it's not to keep water out then perhaps no calking. Or maybe run a bead of kiwigrip if you have some of the same ?

This is a wide range of products and I have yet to hear any negatives on the marine type products. I use them but only over the last 3 or 4 years and see no reason to change. I have no interest other than personal satisfaction with some of their product.

I see more and more shipwrights now using this product. I would say sika flex is doing it tough although they might be part of fixtech anyway , they had the only market origionly .
Fixtech has nothing to do with Sikaflex............see here fixtech which is an Oz product equal to any global product so we should support it...........as I am..............select the best fixtech product for your purpose............

Everything you do on your wooden toerail needs to be waterproof...........up to you which process you use - varnish then fixtech or vice versa.........
I have no commercial contacts with fixtech just know it is an excellent product...........an Australian product..............
I've used Fixtech (but to keep water out from under fittings) and it seems flexible and UV resistant, so good.
