So where did a word like that come from? Think they call that etymology of the word.
i love etymology. as far as i can see, "pusser" was originally slang for a ship's "purser".
i wonder how the term came to be used as slang for the whole RAN?

Not quite right. Naval apprentices were called MOBIs. That stands for Most Objectionable Bastards Imagineable.
Muppet was never a term I heard used when I was in the outfit.
The term "pusser" I believe came from the R.N.
Some other common terms used.
SCRAN:- meals and meal times, ie, Sh!t Cooked up by the RAN.
DIT = Story, book, comic, movie.
Maccas = lollies or sweets (certainly not MacDonalds)
Goffas = Soft drinks
Gippers = stuff
Scrub 'round it = don't worry about it, forget about it
Steppers = clothes for wearing ashore on leave
Getters = thongs
Pigs = grunters = officers
Dun rooters = old blokes usually resident in the chief petty officer's mess
Squarie = girlfriend or wife
Sprog = someone who has just joined up and will continue to be a sprog for at least 6 months
Warrie = comic or movie about war
Yippie = comic or movie about cowboys
Stumper = ****ter = turd burglar
RNer = person who does not wash often, same as British Navy people
Dibdab = Deck seaman, ie dib the brush in the paint tin and dab it on the deck or wherever also known as deck apes
Greenie = electrical trades person
Tiffie = a MOBI who has qualified in his engineering trade without whom the Navy could not function.
Birdie = member of the fleet air arm
Bandie = member of Navy Band
Bubblie = diver
There are many more that I forget.
