I set off from Townsville with the goal of spending a month in the Louiseiades then over to the Solomons.
I didn't make it very far! A broken chainplate forced me to sail to Cairns for repairs.
Is thus your new boat or the old one?
Its the one I've cruised in for the last 3 years. Just sold her a week ago
Great video Dexport, congratulations.
Congratulations also on your jury rig - well done!
regards,
allan
Great story and video. Well done on the jury rig, took your time and thought it through. I hope I can do that when I need to.
Great stuff your videos inspire me to get my yacht cruising again as soon as I get back to her in a few months. I love the transom duck board that's going to be one of my first jobs!

Yep Southace, that is one of my most loved things about that boat!
Thanks Dexport,
Great video, always good to see what other yachties are up to!
Especially when I've got an hour long commute in front of me, and you're sitting in Cairns...sigh.
My boat is currently stooging around Hervey Bay for a week, a couple of friends took their wives and a sister for a week off.
I'm doubly jealous, everyone is on the water!
Well done bro. You make great vids. So cruising stopped for a while for you?
I now feel its worth it to be carrying around an old 10m 6mm stay!
Im loving cruising but geez its a bit stressful. I reckon by the time I'm adjusted itll be home time.

Haha, classic, when you get back from your trip you'll need a long holiday!
I won't be cruising again until May 18 most likely. My season always goes from May till October. I'm looking for boats now, seen 8 so far. Went and looked at the Sayer 37 in Brisbane yesterday, she's the only one so far that I could imagine buying.
Thanks for the video. The island looked fabulous. Which island is it?
Phil
Cheers Phil. Its Northwest Cay of the Herald Cays group. Quite a few little sand cays around this area, I chose that one to visit as it looked like having the most sheltered anchorage. About an hour out there was still a 2m swell but when I got in really close it calmed right down and was very nice. Good sand bottom with good holding. It was a funny feeling. When you're in the whitsundays or similar you'll often rock up to a perfect anchorage and be alone, come 2-3pm though and boats will start appearing and by dark there could be up to 20 boats anchored. Out there I kept expecting that sort of and was surprised every time I scanned the horizon and saw nothing.
She'll be fast.
Yeah you can see that walking down the jetty. I've never sailed a boat like this and am more wondering how she would be over a longer trip. Would she be a boat you'd have to watch all the time or would she go ok if reefed and sailed conservatively? I can compare it to racing cars as I used to drive them. Some cars go like the clappers but are horrible if driven slowly, others are docile and good mannered but also go like a cut snake when needed.
G'day Dexport,
No, I cannot say I raced much against Schiehallion. But I do have a soft spot for Sayer.
To me, I associate John Sayer yachts as tough, seagoing boats that eat miles. There's not much I don't like ; fast, stiff, tough, fast. Head room. Open transom, tiller steer, better for short handed.
Bad points; Cripes...errr...think of something, open simple plan, barren'?sque when compared to bendytoy. If it's composite, ie: unlike a cedar core, it can be noisy below. The 12.50 is like an amplifier, you here every. little. sound.
45% B/D? Wow. It must be the low weight (4700kg). It's only a 2.1 mtr draft with an apparently modest bulb.
I reckon she would have excellent sea manners.
Thread hijack...B/D doesn't tell you how tender a yacht is, does it? IIRC, you can have the ballast at the top of the keel or deep on a bulb and your B/D doesn't change. Her AVS diagram would be interesting to see (beam, hull shape), but knowing Sayer it would be impressive.
I'm pretty sure John's father also designed, but more ferro cruisers? I'm unsure what they're like, but Schiehallion, it looks like a nice boat at a ****teenth of its value.
She seems quite wide regards stability. I don't think I've ever seen a yacht doing max speed with full rags up..well, aside from us once, and that was a big mistake.
Cheers,
SB

Awesome observations Shaggy, much appreciated.
Yeah for sure, Ballast ratio is just a very general guide. But as a comparison, my last boat had 22% so I expect Schiehallion to be a fair bit stiffer! Also, in the ad it says 200kg in the bulb, that is missing a zero.
I spoke with Jon Sayer today and he gave some good info and background into this boat. He said the boat is not noisy, she can slam a bit into sea's but only when sailed too upright.
My offer was accepted today so I go for a survey and sea trials on thursday. Pretty excited as she's chalk and cheer to my last boat.
I'll be making a video about what goes on this Thursday and will post the link here.
Thanks for sharing. It would have taken some discipline to keep recording while dealing with everything. It certainly made for a great story though ![]()
Congrats in advance Dexport! That looks on paper to be a great deal of boat for the money, I'm jealous!
Hi Dexport
Great video and good to see you were able to do a temp fix
Found your problem though because a couple of minutes into the video you said you had eaten a couple of Bananas and having Bananas on the boat has probably caused your bad luck
Regards Don

Haha, lucky I didn't have a girl aboard as well then, as I would have lost the whole rig!
Well, I purchased the Sayer 37 today.
Survey and sea trials went well and I am very happy!
Congratulations on your new girl can't wait to see a utube video.
