I have a separate AIS radio which sends and receives.
I also have a BandG chart plotter.
I am guessing I am transmitting my identifying number when I have my radio on?
Am I doing the same when my BandG instruments are on?

Is your AIS radio connected to the chart plotter so you can see other vessels ? If so turn your radio off and see if you stop receiving the other vessels signals.

Not sure I understand your question.

When you say "radio" do you mean an AIS transceiver (which is separate from your VHF radio), or do you mean a VHF radio which includes an AIS receiver? Or a plain old VHF radio? No-one makes a combined VHF and AIS transceiver to the best of my knowledge.

If you have an AIS transceiver, it will be sending out your MMSI. If you have a VHF radio with AIS receiver, it will not be sending your MMSI. And a plain old VHF radio won't be sending your MMSI. But of course your VHF will be sending your MMSI during a DSC call, but I don't think that relates to your question.

Your B&G plotter won't be transmitting anything at all.

Cheers, Graeme

Only radio I know of is the Standard horizon gx6500. It's pretty extreme - has internal GPS, class b ais and NMEA2k, along with wireless handsets.

I will get on the boat this Sunday and report back to you.
I have had little time or choose other issues to understand when on the boat.
I put more effort and had fun with the BandG race panel although I don't think it improved our starting performance significantly.
Thanks to the crew that race with me, we would think two to five seconds past the starting time was a good result but thats another story.

What model of radio do you have and do you have a seperate AIS transceiver(ie another box) ? It sounds unlikely you are broad casting AIS data.

Bundeena boy,

do do you have a radio operator licence, that is the only way your boat can obtain an MMSI number.
A class B AIS transiever can broadcast every 30 second but class A big ship AIS can prioritise the so called slot. So as close as 30 second intervals is possible.
cheers Richard
