The sweet spot is about 30 feet. Not because I sail a Currawong 30 but because there is adequate room, seaworthy and fast enough. Fairly cheap to run. If I was to consider what you have in mind I would search out a Nicholson 32. Fast for a long keeler and seaworthy with very good accommodation.

I didn't know goats could sail. At least you'll have your alter ego for company.

ss30 defiance are nice and would be great for that.
But you can get a top hat 25, compass 28 or duncanson for fairly cheap
If you are on the cheap you can even consider smaller

We have already discussed that causehecan isn't a goat. He had lost his self portrait and I had a copy which can be found here.

and for causehecan you can find my other threads about top hats here.

Sorry, my bad. I'd forgotten we'd discovered he's actually a blob fish.

So you definitely will need something at least around the 30ft mark.
You do not report your location, so it is difficult to recommend boats on the current market. At 30ft, road transport for an older boat is not usually economical.
However, I suggest you start with something smaller, and get some experience sailing in sheltered waters first. This will help crystalise your thoughts on what you need for a long trip.

Van de Stadt 34.
Decent amount of space, and good performers but still forgiving to sail.
most for sale are steel which is great if its been painted properly. Fortunately these were designed after epoxy paint systems became the norm and rust a lesser issue.

Living aboard full time? Like for years? Or just a dream? 37 feet to 42 feet is still small but manageable by one person,

Make sure it has great wind vane , electric auto pilot as a back up , good fridge / freezer , water maker , small generator, and a couple hundred watts solar panels , great sails , great engine , great bunk ! , great rigging , great chart plotter x 3 , great VHF / HF radios , great anchor and chain /rode /winch , great hull and spars . If it ticks all those boxes , if its 40 ft ish or under it doesn't matter what it is buy it and bon-voyage .

check out free range sailing and a few low budget sailing blogs, work out what you need and go for it, coastal sailing all good a big passage will need more. after a few weeks you will know what you need.
