If you watch this daily update, Annie Lush explains Scallywags mishap.

I take her words more seriously - thou she is recovering in NZ - as a person who knows more about sailing than the "safety Nazis" who commented on and out of hand condemned Witty for what happened.
(how dare you criticize the world's toughest sailors - with noose in hand - is beyond comprehension)

The competitors even the greenest ones forgot more about sailing than the choir of critics will ever know.

Well her comments mirror mine. However interestingly the guys on Brunei appeared to have no harness or PFD on at night. This was also first rule on any boat I raced on offshore at night anyone on deck after dark has to be hooked on.

Neither does the other five most of the time and l am watching every screened bit.

My approach to the whole race is not to pick the bad things and dwell on them but to learn from the bits shown how to improve my handling of the boat and equipment. There is a lot to learn from them - the good things to improve one's knowledge and the bad things to avoid their fails alike.

I'm not criticizing his ability as as a sailor, I don't care about that, so what,,
I criticize him because he has to blame a crew member (comparing him to a child that touches something hot)
Like other good members of the forum pointed out , there seems to be the potential for incidents like this to happen just from observing the racing footage. So until whoever is in charge takes care of all the potential for incidents to happen, they are responsible,, not the crew.
Because he blamed the MOB I condemn him for that. If he had said "It was my fault because I wasn't ensuring that my crew where following the correct procedures",,,, well he has owned the incident and now its up to him to work it out with the crew how to improve.

The MOB and crew now has the potential to learn from his mistake too and work on ways of preventing it from happening again, If you where a crew member you too could ask yourself "What could I have done to Prevent this" instead of just blaming someone.
A person in a leadership position that just blames others for mishaps whilst under his command is not a leader and needs sacking.

Around the 15 minute Mark Ian Walker explains reality.

Put the noose away, please, nobody should be sacrificed.
Even if the MOB was my son would not think otherwise.

WorkSafe rules don't apply here.
Get over it!

Again,,, nothing to do with work safe or seamanship.
From the 15min mark all I hear are excuses.
And if the mob was your dead son those would have been the excuses.
Its like being late for work,,,, the alarm didn't go off,,, I ran out of fuel,,, the car wouldn't start,,, had a flat battery,,,, got a flat tire,,, left my phone behind
