Do any of you have one on your boat as a speedo. I'm about to replace my dead analog paddle wheel unit, its given up after 30 years of service. Im thinking i might go in this direction to avoid replacing through hulls and all that jazz.

No, don't have one. But some times you may find it useful to know your speed through the water (paddle wheel) and not jut your course made good (GPS).
I have seen setups on boat where the depth sound is mounted over the back of the boat (on a pole) and it also has a paddle wheel incorporated into it. This is then linked to a chart plotter. Might be a bit unsightly but easy to maintain.

Hi, that gives the same info that a plotter with gps provides, unfortunately does not provide speed through the water. While this is not that critical it can be of significance.
I have a couple on board. Better than nothing for tuning. The Velociteks are viewable by the crew. Paddle wheel speed available at helm.
They are as accurate as the Raymarine plotter + a bit faster to respond. They also alert about knocks.
We can also shift them to the skiff.
They do chew AA batteries.
If we are racing we tend to use them.
