Has anyone had any experience with a VHF radio that has AIS and built in GPS like this one...

... I do need a new VHF and wondered if it is worth the extra cash or put it towards repairing/replacing the 20year old separate AIS/Radar.

i put one on last year had to replace dead one i find it very handy especially in close maneuvering with ships as you can call them directly to find out where they want you to go
It's a good unit but only an AIS receiver - need to find something with a transceiver so you can also send information.

no its also a trasmitter that is the exact one i have
The gx2200e is a radio transceiver but an ais receiver only.

I have used one and it was a useful bit of kit. You can set up an audible alarm perimeter for constant monitoring. Handy to identify location and direction of ferries, commercial boats and anyone else who has their transceiver on, but obviously doesn't diminish the importance of being on watch.
Think about where you would be locating the unit. If you can't see the screen from your steering station, you have to leave the cockpit to see where the identified vessel is. I can't recall if there's potential to link the radio with another screen.
Its a good radio, and also provides a backup gps.

Works a treat as an AIS receiver and provides an AIS overlay on my chart plotter, but it needs a GPS input.
I suspect the Standard Horizon unit is the only radio that has integrated GPS which handy, but I don't believe the Standard horizon unit has a NMEA 2000 output which could be limiting depending on what chart plotter you have.
Some of the reviews for the unit have expressed concern that there is too much kit in one device which creates a common point of radio failure, although I haven't heard of any failures specifically.

I'd go with avoiding the common point of failure and use individual devices. On my boat radio, GPS and AIS are separate so if one fails at least the others stay working.
