Not sure if you guys have seen the big wheel for boats but it's pretty amazing, will lift barge boats up or down 25 meters of canal , all up its about total it's around 100 meter of water height diffrence including the locks etc.







At the end WW2 was build water bridge, but last decade was in refurbished to current condition.
Below is river Elbe, upper man made canal cutting Germany across, allowing ships transport from
Szczecin Poland - Berlin - Magdeburg - Wolfsburg / home of Volkswagen / to Rhine, and Holland, France etc.

Yeah I saw a doco about it in an engineering course. From memory it uses the same amount of energy as a couple of boiling kettles due to counterbalance and it being run on hydraulics. Pretty amazing engineering!
