It looks to me that this may be where forecasters have it hard. 40 knots in the Beaufort scale is

Sea heaps up and white foam from breaking waves begins to be blown in streaks along the direction of the wind; spindrift begins to be seen

Whilst these guys may have seen a 40 knot gust I don't see any spindrift, and they seem unconcerned and hanging on with one hand whilst watching dolphins. 40 knots consistent? I don't think so. So were the 40 knot gusts not forecast.

At the beginning of EVERY forecast the BOM states - gusts can be up to 40% more than the AVERAGES given here. So 40% of 25 is 10 knots which gives peak gusts of 35 knots. So the BOM were off by 5 knots - sounds very good to me. A check of Meteye for the day would have shown much more detail.

So please be careful out there - a forecast 25 SHOULD have gusts of 35 and maybe even more without you calling it not forecast.

Thanks for that , I looked at the description at the bottom of the video and they state they where in 6m seas and Newcastle harbour was closed, but i think at 40t you would be pressed to get 4m seas.
but having done the same journey in 30kt the seas look impressive specially blowing against the current
