Hello,
I have put in an offer on a boat in the south of Sydney, and I'm about to proceed with a survey. I've had a few small red-flags on the boat and need a diligent, thorough and trustworthy surveyor to go through this vessel. The marina has suggested their people, however, I'm concerned about a conflict of interest. I figured this would be an excellent place to go to find such a person.
Thanks for your time.
Vic.
Hello,
I .... need a diligent, thorough and trustworthy surveyor to go through this vessel.
Michael Lapin through Blue Water Marine Surveyors, email blue.water@optusnet.com.au . Hugely experienced through a lifetime in the industry as a shipwright, manager and surveyor. Tough but fair and if there's a fault, he'll find it and suggest remediation. Highly recommended.
Hi Chris,
I ended up going with Paul at Blue Water Marine. I can highly recommend him.
He was thorough and fair, and has certainly put the brakes on the sale of a boat that was supposedly 'well cared for' and 'ready to sail away' that had notable rot on the bowsprit, potentially dangerous modifications, sea cocks that were jammed, hoses split, clamps rusted through, (able to pull off hoses under the waterline with two fingers), and 'one or two blisters on the keel' was literally hundreds of blisters on the keel and hull. Unfortunately it seems this 'well cared for boat' has been neglected for years, and a few new covers and some fancy photos were enough to make some untrue claims. I'm a little miffed at wasting my money on a haul out, but it was money well spent considering what it had saved me

Money well spent indeed.
Money well spent yes, but it should be the vendor's money if no sale results because of the findings of slipping and survey.
If a broker is involved he should have taken the money into trust and refunded it due to failed contract at no fault of the purchasor.
Plus I wager that none of the findings from your surveyor will make a skerrick of difference as to how the seller or the boat stealer will continue to present this boat to some other poor chump.
