Hi all,
Just reaching out to anyone who could help with specs on these yachts.
We recently became proud owners of a 1983 Sparkman & Stephens Defiance 30 by Savage and are in love with her. I call her the chubster as she reminds me of a well rounded lady.
She's very spacious inside and enough headroom for my 6ft partner to stand in and then some.
We plan to work on improving her as she really deserves the love so we are hoping to find any kind of specs available on her.
We also need to replace the propellor and shaft down the track as the hull was sealed and propellor removed at some point, running on an outboard now when needed. Not sure why as the hull is beautiful so I guess the motor just ran its course and previous owners decided to seal the area, which is another thing we will eventually replace with a brand new inboard.
She also has a stunning racing history including having an honour plaque inside, winning races like the Melbourne to Hobart race in the 80s and was known as the Jazzman.
if anyone can help with information and specs, history, sail makers who specialise in these yachts as a recommendation etc, would love to hear from you. ??
Scroll down to the "Interesting Boats for sale" thread, second to last page. I thought it was a Defiance but apparently, it's not. Congratulations, I think you have made a very wise choice of yacht.
Thank you. We are delighted with her and cannot wait to make her better with time.
wish I could post photos but I'm new so it won't let me for now. :)
The Defiance and other versions of the S&S 30 get regular mentions on this forum. You could spend days going back through the threads. Fill in your bio so people get some idea where this vessel ends up. Ypu might just end up being a neighbour.

This 2018 thread is a good start

And here by Lydia

Very difficult to get spec data of the 2096 design - this is design 2098 which looks very similar and could be the same - you would need to do relevant checks.............someone on here should be able to confirm if 2098 and 2096 are the same. The below link (earlier in it) also has the Aqua 30 (UK) and S+S 30 (Swarbrick)
sailboatdata.com/sailboat/north-star-1000/
also a lot of detail here
www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f47/sparkman-and-stephens-30-defiance-owners-56435.html
Northstar is about 300mm narrower, indeed Defiance was original framed up for the narrow beam so that may explain the 2096/2098 question.
The Swarbrick 30 is very different and an earlier design number.
The Aqua 30 is also different.
Thanks Lydia,
So the Defiance by Savage is definitely the 2098. I'm going to dig through all the paperwork on board and see what I can find just in case there is more info.
I found the whole inboard manual. There is bound to be something more helpful on it.
So I found an old S&S30 catalogue on deck with specifications and some really cool information about them, but it won't let me share them in here as I'm still restricted to post photos or links.
it's from 1990.
if anyone wants a copy, let me know and I will email the catalogue to you or post once I can. :)

Hi
I have S & So 30 Defiance, what would you like to know ?
Mine is sail drive.
Draft - 1.6m
Beam - 3.05
Displacement - 4500kg
Year - 1986
Where do you get the 4500kg from, you have weighed it.
l
This ( mine ) boat was racing Melbourne - Davenport - in 1969 . I found when the boat was lifted that it has extra weight on fin keel looking like mini wing keel. Probably that's where the weight come from.

For Mattsam. (because I couldn't post to the message guys)
