Geez wept. I felt ill watching it.
The yacht looks like a Twister. To be fair, this could have happened even if there was an extra person onboard. It's easy to sit in our comfortable chairs and say he should have jumped early and swam ashore. He probably was that close to motoring clear and maybe if it was a fin keeler with the prop in clearer water he might have got clear. The aircrewman/paramedic did an outstanding job and deserves a Make and Mend this Sunday if he is not duty.
NO PFD!!!!!!!
Remember in the surf a PFD can be a death trap. There is good reason to avoid them when in breaking water, if you know what you are doing in the surf.
When getting hit by breaking waves, the best way to avoid getting clobbered is to go under the wave. This is something every surfer or body surfer knows. When my wife capsized in her kayak in the surf zone, her PFD got her clobbered by the waves as she couldn't dive under them - it made a bad situation much worse. When I trained offshore in my Laser on my own (always in an onshore breeze) I never wore a lifejacket. I had seen a couple of people get stranded from a fast moving Laser in a breeze - better to wear a full length steamer, no shoes and be able to swim fast and well.
cheers
Phil

That was a very tough winch. A great deal of courage attempting it with the wave action on the yacht. Yes, a make and mend and CO's commendation, if not more.
"Can I check on the welfare of the winchman?"
"Winchman's got no injuries".
I suspect the winchman's built somewhat tougher than most people.....!
