Hi,

I am just getting into sailing. My partner and I are going on a 10 day honeymoon at the beginning of September and I have been looking for somewhere we can charter a smallish yacht and skipper and sail around, island hop, snorkel (maybe surf or kite) etc. Everything I have found is like a luxurious cameraman staring at $2k a day that sleeps >7 ppl or a super-yacht. Its just us two. Hoping to get a mono hull as well.

Any recommendations or ideas?

Thanks, Jack

Hi Jbarne,
Good on you. Can I flip the question and ask what is the budget you want to spend, and how long on the water, the whole 10 days?
That could help fine tune your options,
Cheers

Probably a total of 5 to 7 days. Not too sure about budget. Maybe $800 a day but happy to go higher or lower if needed.

Your budget is bang on the money for a bareboat charter, that's a nice 40 footer in most charter locations.

One issue you face is that skipper/boat package are mostly larger boats, as you need provide a cabin just for the skipper, and most charters being a min 2 cabins for paying guests, that means 3 cabins, say 40+ foot.
That's $800-$1000 a day for the boat, maybe a bit less.

If you look at Sunsail they charge you an extra $270 per day for a skipper, so over a 7 day period that $1700 odd.
It sounds dear, but their hourly rate is actually pretty low compared to most tradesman, so I wouldn't expect to get a much cheaper skipper rate than that anywhere. And you need to cover meals for the skipper on top of that.
Fuel is $80 per day.

Might be cheaper to delay it and charter locally? My boat is being used for some day charter with a skipper for $1000 in SE Qld as a general rule of thumb.
