Drilling bolt holes through the deck I have always used silicone sealant. Nowadays it seems there are better solutions like butyl mastic. What do the brains trust recommend?
Oh my don't mention silicone around here....
im a big fan of butyl tape. Not the butyl mastic in the tube which is too soft . I buy it online from the boat warehouse for about $25
I use this now for all above water situations - not underwater.

My experience with trex sealant has been that long term it is not uv safe and ultimately degrades.
I now use simpsons or fixtech.

Silicone is good for engine gaskets and fish tanks. That Soudal stuff r13 uses looks interesting. Some of the Selleys equivalents are worth a look too.
I've been redoing a few of my deck penetrations and have been following this guide to seal with epoxy then butyl tape. marinehowto.com/sealing-deck-penetrations-to-prevent-core-rot/

That is interesting UncleBob, are you talking clear or grey or both. I've been using T-Rex often at work, but only grey as clear in any sealant won't stand up to UV.

The product was white, I even rang the supplier to ask about UV performance, the response was that they had no complaints and it was fine.
Yeah, right.

Thanks, never heard of Simpsons but it looks good. Is it available in clear or white? I could only find this;

Hi, I usually use white, sometimes black, job dependant. Don't know if clear is available from them or not. Do know that white stays white, even after years of exposure on the deck.
Butyl tape: works 100% of the time, no sticky mess to clean up, doesn't go off, one decent roll will cost the equivalent of a couple of tubes of goo but will last you for years and years.
Cheers, Graeme
