Hi everyone - I'm new to this forum. I'm in the process of purchasing a boat in in Perth and plan to sail it to Sydney between now and the end of the year. Looking for any advice/tips/tricks or helpful resources :)
thanks
Trying to have a schedule for the southern ocean is a mistake.
Be prepared to wait for a decent weather window and have a good idea of your boats' capabilities.
Fremantle Sailing Club cruising guide is good place to start.
Been across twice. Both times in Feb to April as Lydia said but that was back in the 70's with limited weather predictions.
I go the long way around these days.
Yep crystal blue one day, 5m+ breakers the next. Im from esperance and from about sep on the easterlies start. Even through summer prepare for the worst. The biggest swells I have ever seen was late December.
Whales would be another consideration. About now they are all congregated along the south coast. Was in Albany 2mths back and there was already a few around.
Thanks for the info. I had read that October was a good time to cross but we are in no rush. Fully prepared to wait for a decent window - timelines are not a cruisers friend! Thanks for the wa cruisers guide Ilenart.
The other way is to drop down south to about 43 south and get the bottom of the highs and the top of the lows and come back up under King island.
Depends on the boat.
Otherwise have plenty of fuel because if it is windy you don't want to be moving in October- December as there is no blocking high until later.
Have you left yet
.. would love to hear about the trip from VIC to SYD, i am planning a trip from Hastings to Sydney.
cheers
If he's on the yacht karlee he's got some very worried family members and VMR coast watch at present. Departed Esperance on route to Portland. No radio contact for a week. My advise crossing the great Australian bight is hire a SAT phone for the crossing save all the grief from the presently worried party's.
