G'day guys,

Next March I will be heading up to Exmouth from Busselton. Taking it super easy and stopping along the way.

Has anyone spent any time in and around Exmouth during the April-August time of year? I have a few questions:

1, What are some great and protected anchorages around the area?

2, For the Marina, do you have to book well in advance or just drop in?

3, Is there any places to get freshwater on the West Coast of Exmouth or only in town (like the boat ramp)?

4, My draft is 1.3 meters, there looks to be quite a bit of reef around and a lot of the inside of the Ningaloo unsurveyed - is it pretty sketchy sailing around there?

Cheers for the info!

Gregg

Hi Greggo,

I spent some time around there towards the end of September a few years ago. I was heading to Perth and the southerlies were starting to pick up making our southbound route a bit of a slog. We waited for a nice window before heading around the North West Cape and spent the week in the marina. We rang them about two hours out and they couldn't have been more accommodating.

1. Norweigean Bay, Coral Bay and Tintabiddi would all be nice anchorages for you. I didn't go into Norweigean as it was already dark when we got thee so elected to continue on. At that time of year, anywhere along the EAST side of the North West Cape would be a pleasant enough to anchor.
2. We rang the marina two hours out on our way from Onslow and they couldn't have been more accommodating (bearing in mind end of September early October was at the very tail end of the season.
3. On the west coast of the peninsula, the only place you'd be able to get water would be Coral Bay and you'd have to lug that in Jerry cans IIRC.
4. My draft is 2.1, and there is a lot of places I was not bothered with the anxiety to go into. As we were primarily only waiting for a weather window to continue south on, we hired a car and spent the time sightseeing by road. If you don't want to spend a week in the marina, you can anchor just north of the marina and dingy in to the ramp and drive from there.

The marina is a long but easy walk from town and you wouldn't want to be carrying supplies back. Anns Cabs is brilliant service that I would recommend. But Car hire will be cheaper if you are there for a few days or more.

Just be aware that most insurance companies are not insuring you for travel about the 26 degree (Canarvon) now until the end of May (use to be April).

Down load the FSC Cruising Guide of Western Australia for all the info you will need. Feel free to drop me a PM and I can give you my number of you would like to chat about anything.

Hi Greggo,
Busselton to Exmouth is a major trip.
Maybe like me going from Bundaberg to Townsville, my being on the east coast.
The bay in Exmouth is huge and I think you could have a lot of fun there with a 1.3 metre draught.
Do your research and I am sure it will be an adventure you will rember for the rest of your life.

Seabreezer Cassa lives at Exmouth now I believe. Look him up.
