Hi guys I recently bought a roberts boat, in the forward cabin I have a carpet clued to the walls upon pulling the carpet back it's clued to what looks like refrigeration panelling. Does anyone know why they would construct a boat this way...
I was hoping to pull all the carpet away from the walls and replace it with something else my thoughts were alupanel or is there any recommendations what to use the carpet looks terrible
Thanks guys in advance

It was a seventies thing! quite common in trailer sailers and Holden vans. Hopefully that not a steel Roberts.

Yes it is a steel roberts built in 1985. Were there issues with the steel roberts, I tried to do some research but couldn't find much on the build of the boat

Steel Roberts are no worst than other steel boats. I was more concerned with the carpet absorbing condensation and holding moisture in places difficult to access.

Yes Gary looks like insulation with the carpet clued over the top of it

RE: Yes Gary looks like insulation with the carpet clued over the top of it

The insulation is to prevent or reduce condensation and is probably necessary.
The hull will have longitudinal stringers which can catch water.

As per Ramona's concerns:
Try and locate the stringers, remove the insulation above them and see if you are in the clear with trapped water and rust.
Then replace with original or new insulation.
Doing this in a few locations will tell you what's going on.

The stringers won't be hard to locate they will be on the chines and centred between. The chine stringers are the ones most likely to cause grief as they are fully welded and sometimes the limber holes get welded shut,
l personally don't like the idea of insulation unless your in extreme climates. As a matter of fact as part of refitting my 84 built steely I'm making a point of removing any lining panels at the back of cupboards etc to allow easy inspection
this pic should give an idea of what's behind the insulation
