In the process of registering our boat as an Australian vessel, it turns out that a boat has been already registered with the same name. Now we are pondering renaming our boat after some 40 plus years. I have never beleived in superstition, but anyone we try to ask an opinion of brings up Poseidon's wrath. What is your opinion on this?
Interested in the process you are going through, apart from the registration cost, what are the other things, apart from boat naming?
Surely the boats name is not the only indentifier? When I google AIS sites I get lots of similar boat names?
It would be sad to have to rename your boat after 50 years!
cheers Richard
Whilst these superstitions are quaint, they're just myths.
Shame to rename the boat but don't worry about Neptune's revenge.
Still, it's a good excuse for a renaming ceremony, complete with appropriate libation!
Cheers

Superstition is a funny thing...... Nobody believes in it, yet nobody wants to take the chance either.
Hi Seabreasy
We renamed ours back to its original name and it is still floating
When it was built in 1984 was originally at Port Huon (bottom of Tassie) with the name Aqua-fae
It was then sold to a man at Beauty Point (top of Tassie) who kept the same name
He then sold it to a bloke in Hobart who renamed her Addiction
We bought her a few years ago and bought her back to Port Huon and I did a bit of research and tracked down the owner from Beauty Point, found out her history and changed her name back to the original so she is back in her original port under her original name so she has gone full circle
As for removing any trace of her original name to appease the gods, while she was called Addiction she has a plaque on compression post in the cabin with the name Aqua-fae on it
Regards Don
I know and the boat has been on state registers in both NSW and QLD witht the name, so you'd assume, when someone registers a 2002 built vessel, they would crosscheck the names.
Seebreasy73, the state registration departments aren't at all concerned with the names of a vessel. They are identified by their state registration.
The Australian Ships registry do concern themselves with a name and as you have discovered there can only be one of.. Why don't you consider adding to the existing name.
I would only change the name if the boss said to.
Why do you want to register it?
Because we would like to sail abroad a bit

Yeah, but that is absolute rubbish. It's a shame there is no federal registry to avoid such a thing. Besides, my boat was christened with the name 20 years earlier, so why should I be the one to compromise? Or at least the registry should compromise and allow for a dupplicate name registration for cases like this.

Yours is a different scenario, actually you did not end up changing the name of the boat, the bloke did who called Addiction.
No wrath of Neptune on you.

Because somebody else registered their boat on the Australian registry first. Why should they change the name of their boat?
Are you intending to sail internationally?
Now I will get some smiles about this. Years ago I bought a Space Sailer 24 which had a really obtuse name so I renamed it after my dog. On the first day she carried the new name I got my partners father who was a lay preacher to bless the boat and everyone who sailed on it before and will in the future. We put a coin at the bottom of the mast. After the blessing we moved the boat astern first. This is to not run over the souls of who may have or not sailed on the boat. After that we went on to win multiple sailing championships and many coastal sails with no problem. The boat was a dream. I'm a scientist and wanted to make sure if there really was Gods of the ocean, which I found hard to believe, we wouldn't p..ss them off and it worked ![]()
You could just add something to the existing name like II or 2 or +
not without making it worse, besdes by doing so the name becames a sentence
Thanks for the link Seabreezy,
not it intending to hi jack your thread, my yacht has numbers only as her registration, as in 56951. She is registered in NSW with that number.
i assumed all NSW boat registration number had an N at the end.
my yacht is of German origin, so could she have been Australian registered in the past? IE sailed out by a previous owner?
also Seabreezy, May we ask your yachts current name?
best Richard
foot note, I can answer my own question after searching AMSA
no she was not registered, my number, with an 8 in front is registered to TOMC.
Interesting not if you are permanent resident, like me, you can only register a vessel up to 12 metres, mine is 11.4
i see see some names are obviously changed or added to enable registration without really changing. I looked up the name Condor
now Condor the 1983 Maxi residing in the Whitsundays is registered as "Condor of Airlie Beach". Among the 3-4 other Condor like names. Maybe Seabreezy can work out a compromise that still retains the main concept of the boats original name?
cheers Richard

Richard, if the boat sailed from GErmany it had to have German registration initially. I think international maritime rules apply. You can have a search in the Australian registry by the registration number, see if you get anything. Also, usually boat names are listed on the original registration certificates, does your have no name listed?
My boat's name is Relax II, since 1977
You're a sailor. If you didn't believe in tradition you'd have a motorboat. Half the fun of sailing (or maybe a quarter of the fun) is following on traditions. So make a proper party of it and go through the official, Poseidon approved, methodology of renaming your boat. Hell, one of the reasons my boat is named Foolish Muse is because the Muses were the daughters of Zeus, and Poseidon had a thing for them. It just made good sense to name my boat after something Poseidon likes. And so far it has proven a successful strategy.

well, I am still not a-muse-d, I wrote to the body to see if they would somehow allow a dupplicate name. After all, there are so mani Dick Smiths walking around and nobody stopping them from going abroad...

If all you want is the same name, then just do NAME II or NAME III or NAME IV. Officially these are completely different names of the boat.
