we are planning a quick trip to Portarlington from Hobson bay.
overnight stay at pier.
Does anyone know of current status of recreational boaters there now as there is/has been major construction of breakwater and new jetty for the ferry.
thanks
I anchored overnight there recently. With the extended breakwaters completed it is very protected, and excellent to anchor in for a calm night's sleep. The ferry is a cat and hence makes virtually no wash, just a toot as it goes in and out. There was a large piling barge and its workboat taking up a fair bit of the anchorage space but they may be gone now. There are only two casual berths and I believe they are short-term and boats must remain attended. I believe there are no casual overnight berths so if you want to go ashore it's swim, dinghy, or leave a person on the boat. Having said that the dozen or so new pile berths looked finished but completely empty, so I'm sure you could go in there and be gone early to avoid hassles.
I assume Parks Vic run it so you could try phoning their Queenscliff office.
Cheers, Graeme
