Gday team

A set of charts for the above races is running up a total of about $2k. It is a requirement they are carried.

1) How long are these charts valid, do they have an expiry date? I was thinking of putting out a WTB note (does anyone have a set?)

2) Can you download and print? I have access to A3 printer but thats about it.

Cheers
Ed.

I gather your talking about admiralty charts.
They don't expire but they need to be updated regularly.
You can do this yourself from Notice to Mariners web site or give them to a chart shop for updating.
Not sure how this sits with race organisers thesedays.
Tasmanian Map Centre offer discount package rates for all the charts for the S/H .
I don't think photocopies would be acceptable.

A few things
charts are atmospheric stable paper so don't try to copy
besides print shop will not do it as the salt gets in the machines
smaller size not practical
besides chart splits are crap for Hobart anyway
as to updating I am not they are any chart agents left so do it yourself

mind you my sets are now over twenty years old. Not too much water damage

one is framed though
green cape to st Hellen's with irratic position plots. Rather water damaged
From the late 1990s

but as they say Hobart is easy
go out the heads turn right pass five lighthouses and turn right again

I may know someone who has the electronic charts of Sydney to Hobart. My friend printed them at Office works and they worked well.

Left field thought.
Get maps printed on vinyl like boat wrap sticker, maybe stick to a thick plastic so you can roll up.
Prop cost would not be viable

I have chart compendia from Bundaberg to Apollo Bay. They are 24x34 cm per page: I don't know how that translates to get an A3 copy from a double spread of some of these charts.

I purchased Memory-Map 2 years ago with all Australian Charts for about $200.
Selected charts of interest at appropriate scales for a Bass Strait cruise, 'printed' them to pdf's on a USB stick, printed and laminated A3 size at Officeworks for about $1.70 per copy.
Excellent result.
regards to all

The rules for the Sydney to Hobart race state we must carry the following maps.

I will dig further and see if a scaled colour print out will suffice.

Im betting it wont. :-)

Xeroxed - B&W - full size copies were accepted a few years back. I even have a few if they are allowed and anyone wants to borrow them. I'm not sure how current the updates have to be; the rocks haven't moved much but lights etc might have changed.

Given that around 100% of the fleet will use some form(s) of electronic navigation I would expect the paper-based charts would only be there in case of total electronic failure or GPS outage. In that case, anything less than perfectly scaled charts would be useless for plotting positions and courses on, even assuming that there was sufficient skill on board to use this ancient art.

Yeah, after going through a few CYC audits and failing for the smallest things, I think you've got buckley's of getting that through...

Mate you realise these charts are Mercator Charts and although not really relevant thesedays for a S/H are a requirement for a cat 1 race.
BTW the ones I have measure approx. 70cms by 100cms.
Its only $800 app which is small change for overall cost to get cat .1.
