Nice.
theres something quite majestic about sailing boats from that era. Things were getting sleeker but still setting a monsterous amount of sail.
However did they stay upright with all that power trying to blow them over ?.
A lot of ballast and a lot of crew.
Wow that looks impressive! So what sails are we looking at here, front to back? Is that large yellowish sail the mizzen with the main just in front of it?

Schooner.

Back to front you would have mainsil, atop of that would be main topsil, then looks like main staysil, onto the fore mast we got foresil with a foresil topsil, then I think it's inner jib, outer jib and flying jib. That's my guess anyway

Ah I see, just looked up a sail plan, the schooner main is enormous!
Judging by the number of crew, or lack there of (that I can see), I'd say it may have powered winches. Kinda detracts from the sail thing. Not knocking it, but if we're talking classics, these are more my style. I've never been such a fan of the clipper bow, nor (generally) schooners.

Could they have made that Mizzen any smaller ?![]()
Agnetta. I raced against her a decade ago. the only tie anyone was close was in the start line, after that she took off into the distance. I'd imagine the mizzen would be a rule cheater - no doubt it also helps with balance.

Just read she's now for private charter.

What do you reckon, about an acre of sail to about an eighth of an acre of deck??
The Kiwis have been doing the same ratio for over 100 years on their "Mullet Boats", just on a smaller scale. ![]()

Isn't the Mullet boat the forefather of the Hartley 16??

If you are ever in Auckland make sure you visit the Ponsonby Cruising Club just beside the harbour bridge. www.pcc.org.nz/
It is the home of the Mullet Boat racers. I think the rule is on these 18 to 24 footers is that the mast may be no higher than 40 foot. That is radical. ![]()
They are that heavy on the helm it usually take three burly guys to steer them as it looks like in that photo.![]()
