Steerer or driver is an old truckie term. A steerer was a truckie who just pointed the truck where he wanted it to go and put his foot on either the gas or brake and did bugger all else. A driver was considered a much better operator in as much as he drove the vehicle in a way that helped with fuel consumption, didnt over rev it, used the engine braking capacity and generally took pride in the fact that he cared for the vehicle and drove it accordingly. Some transport companies used the term as a question when interviewing prospective new drivers. To be classed as a driver and NOT a steerer was a compliment.
My last job driving trucks , I never used the foot brake only the exhaust brake and gears took a day off and got into trouble not telling any one the brakes are not working 
Sort of learn't that from mining trucks, some mines they would sack a driver if he used the brakes

Sorting out the drivers from the drovers was integral to making ends meet.
Drivers meaning,,,,,,,, i know how to drive trucks, drovers meaning, I drove it all but i am a fxxxWit.
makes a huge difference to the profit margin, lol
